Well - the noise from this pump has gotten to the point that I shut off the aux tank and I'm running off the main tank. I couldn't hear it inside the cab (too much shooting with no hearing protection :-laf ) but the noise was driving my wife nuts. I'm going to call the installer tomorrow to see if he's come up with a fix yet. If not, I'm going to pull it into my shop and see if I can figure out what the problem is. It still seems to me that the pump in the aux tank is pushing too much fuel to the injector pump. I'll post whatever I come up with here to hopefully save the rest of you from a $2,000 heartache  .

Thanks for all the responses. If I can't get this right I very well may go with the gravity setup into the main tank. I like this one I have right now though because it's a 90+ gallon fuel tank with a good toolbox.

I wonder if anyone has installed a 05 Pump into a TANK of a older model truck say like a 03 ? If that is a Fix for these pumps that are Failing, I wonder if it could be done????? Radar Doc

I did a 6. 2 a few years back with gravity flow and it was over a year before we had it sorted out. It was a dual saddle tank set up in the front corners that the maufacture hooked into the fill spout. The truck was a dog untill the fuel was down into the main tank. No matter how much I moved the timing ahead it was still a pooch. In the end it became clear that the fuel was being returned into a tank that was 100% full and the pump had to lift the weight of the fuel untill the top tanks were empty. This would cause the housing presure to increase on the injection pump and retard the timing. It would take the timing back as far as 0deg from 6deg. Once the return line was moved to the top of the saddle tank it ran perfecly. These trucks are different being they are electronic timing but something has to work harder to return the fuel.

Well... ..... I'm going to install a 30 psi pump in this tank and see if that solves the problem. I don't know if DC is on top of things or not by claiming that the factory lift pump is putting out 58 psi.

I'll post results here, but it will be a week or two before I get the new pump assembly. The tank place has been great to work with and they are motivated to figure out what makes these 05's tick.

I just bought a 2005 CTD 3500 DRW Laramie 6spd quad cab. I had an auxiliary tank installed in the bed, and the fuel pump they installed started making noise.

Hello,

Depending of course on how much fuel you need to carry, Have you considered buying an auxillary tank from "Transfer Flow" in Chico Calif. ? They make a 60 gal. replacement tank for the original tank which also frees up your whole bed and eliminates the fuel pump issue. I just had one installed on my 04. 5 Dodge 3500 HO diesel, SWD.

The cost is about $800 installed.

I didn't consider one because I needed a tool box as well and decided to go with the tank/tool box combo since I'm eating up bed space anyway. Gooseneck hitch and everything still work fine.

Sounds like a good setup you have though. My aux tank actually holds about 100 gallons, which gives me over 130 gallons of fuel. My new fuel pump was just shipped to me and I should have it installed when I get time next week. I'll post an update re: how it works out.

Other than the pump issue, which I'm hopeful is about to be fixed, this tank and tool box are fantastic. I believe this was more an issue of the installer being caught off guard with an 05 that had a factory in-tank fuel pump. He said the Dodge people had just advised him that the pumps were NOT in the tanks on the 05's before I went in there. Even the selling dealer  didn't realize the pump was in the tank until I told them. They're all good people though and I'm sure this will work out for me and eliminate the problems for the other guys who go with this setup. I was the guinea pig on this one :-laf .

Hello,

Sounds like you got the problem solved. Good for you. I know what you mean about the "guinea pig" feeling. A month prior to having my tank installed, Transfer flow did not have a tank for the 04 truck designed yet. Another Company in So. Calif. had a tank for the o4 but would only sell me a tank if they installed it. :-{} Didn't make sense to me, although they said it was for liability reasons. Keep us posted if this solves your problem.

Got it fixed

Installed a new pump in the tank today and it works like a champ. All you can hear now is a little humming noise if you're standing right by the tank. Took me about 30 minutes this morning to install the new pump.

The people I bought it from are just north of Dallas in Frisco, Texas. Great people. They stood behind their product. You can see their tanks at www.auxtank.com.

Just posting an update like I promised. I'm a happy camper :D .

Tractorseller, Did you ever get a spec on the supply pump pres required on the 05? What pres did you end up with? Are montoring the presure under load and if so how much of drop are you seeing?

My tank is in the shop and I have not had the time to find out these things for myself.

Thanks for the update.

I'm not monitoring the pressure, but this one is running a lot less psi than the one I just took out. I believe the owner of the tank place said this pump runs 6 to 8 psi??? I ran it between 20 and 30 miles around town today and it ran great. Nothing over 55 mph though. I'll find out the exact psi on Monday and post an update for you. I'm just enjoying the quiet hum of an electric fuel pump operating like it's supposed to right now :-laf .

As far as operation under load... ... I'll have a load of tractors hooked up soon and I'll know real quick how it holds up to the higher fuel demands.

Give me a day or two and I'll get some specifics.

This new pump puts out between 6 and 8 psi. A test was run on an 05 Dodge factory pump and it was putting out 6 psi at idle and 0 psi when throttled up. The gauge was installed at the line before it hits the injector pump. My problem before was that the auxiliary tank pump was putting out way to much pressure and was fighting against itself. New pump works like a champ.

Hope this helps.
