well we use the same oil and filter in the '06 that we used in the '03 and the '01 ...

rotella synthetic and fleetguard filters and the '06 with 5 miles on it is blacker than our '01 and '03 with 5,000 ...

EVERY 325 motor owner i've spoke to has the same comment about instantly dirty oil ...

You must keep in mind that this engine must use a engine oil that is low ash rated or the ash in the oil will possibily do damage to the DPF. :)

New guy here, w/first post.

I bought an 07 mega cab w/5. 9 on 6/12/07 had black oil @ 150mi.

Changed oil @ 700mi was black again within 100 mi.

Going to change it again tomorrow with 2250mi, I expect it to go black also.

It is not just the 6. 7's with this problem, this is my first diesel and this issue makes me nervous.

Love the site!

How about a small survey. How many of us have the new 6. 7 and the oil went pure black within 300 miles or so from brand new. Also, how many people have good clean oil? Lets see if it's a engine by engine case, and narrow it from there. I am well aware than diesels turn oil black, but I have never, to include the big rig's seen any thing like it.

I take my truck to Wyoming Diesel Power for my regular service. Had to change the oil at 2400 miles and it was very black. They are our authorized Cummins dealer around these parts and have a tech who is certified on the 6. 7. They said it is normal for this oil to be black on this engine and not to be concerned about it. They know what the heck they are doing so I don't worry about it. I may be able to extract more info from them tomorrow if you guys would like.

For those or you really concerned have the oil analyzed by an idependant lab and I think you will find out it is normal. The oil in my 98. 5 24V was black almost immediately after pouring it in so I don't expect anything different from the 6. 7.

It seems like that this is a devided topic. I can say from owning several dodges, that my 02 "2nd Gen" I would have clear oil for almost 3K. Now this new 6. 7 can't seem to make it 100 miles with out it turning black. I guess it might be normal or might not. Who knows. But I am interested in every ones opinion on this subject.

Sounds like if you have an EGR equipped truck, a good oil bypass filter would be well worth having. . Theres lots of us that have non-egr 5. 9s that wont drive without them even.

Just for comparison sake, I changed the oil on my 5. 9 recently and could still read the dipstick after 2k miles. It was getting dark but still had some honey color left in there.

Good luck with your new 6. 7s. Sounds like they will be nice rigs after the emission control bugs get worked out.
