Noise levels for 99+ Dodge Cummins?

Howdy,
Just picked the truck up from my fleet dealer last night. Man!... Is it sweet!! Now, the manual didn't say anything much about break-in procedures for the Cummins. Can you folks help me out with some of the major do's and don'ts on these things?
I'm coming from years of gas engine work. Is the break-in much different on a diesel?
Thanks!

Hank

Okay, It's like this.

First 700 miles, baby the brakes, clutch, rear-end, front-end, and just about everything else.

Then, Get The BIGGEST Load you can find, hook it up to your truck, and find a BIG, L-O-N-G Hill. Tow your load up that hill a couple times, Foot to the Floor method is best, and Keep the RPMS High. 2,500-3,000RPMS

OR!

Take your truck out and after 700 miles,,
Drive your truck like me.

LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!

After putting a nice load on your engine, the MPG should go up as much as 2 MPG.
(10,000 miles is the "magical" number for gas mileage to come up,, it a "computer" thing)

Also,,, Do NOT LUG your ISB!!.
ANYTHING Below 1,600 is considered lugging,, acording to cummins.
Do not be afraid at all!! To take your truck down the highway for hours on end pushing 3,000 RPMS. My Dad has driven his '98 24v ISB since it was new, doing 70MPH and NEVER Using 5th gear. (thats about 2,800RPM)

Be sure to get a fuel pressure gauge, first thing.

Things different from a gas engine are,, REV-IT Straight out of the BOX!!

My Two Cents.

If you are thinking 3,000 RPM is high for this diesel,, some guys are pushing 4K RPMS, and there is a governer kit out there for 5,400RPM.

From what I hear,, Piers is pushing his 12v to something over 4K.

Hey, congratulations on your new rig, and welcome to TDR.

Go back to the home page, go down to "Feature Articles" and you will find the "brake in article". It’s a good read.

We just got our new truck, I am running the engine hard, gentle but full acceleration onto freeways, slowing or stopping then acceleration hard up hills where there is no traffic, etc.

This weekend, with about 400 mile on the clock we are hooking up our 14K 5er and going on our first tow, about 1500 miles round trip. 100 miles from home we enter the Chocolate Mountains with lots of ups and downs. This should help brake this puppy in.

I have jac brakes and will be as easy on the truck as I can, but will work the engine hard.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

Bob
