I just replaced my 93 Dakota with a new Ram. I bought the extended warranty based on a friend who has had his Ram in the shop a lot. After reading this forum for several months, I feel his problems were avoidable. I have NEVER had a good experience getting my Dakota serviced by Dodge. I also plan on installing a DTT trans upgrade.

Is there anyone out there who thinks it would be a mistake to cancel my extended warranty?

Thanks for all the great information.

If you're planning on aftermarket upgrades, then it would be a waste of money IMHO to have extended warranty. The regular 3yr/36,000 warranty is crappy enough. DC has REALLY LOUSY warranty service and they will do whatever they can to try to void your warranty.

I can't wait for my 100,000 miles so the warranty issue is not a factor.

I'm sorry to say, but warranty work at Brand F is also very bad too. Seems the manufacture want to just sell the trucks and wash their hand of the problem.

I would cancel the ex warranty and put the cash toward the Pacbrake.

The transmission is the weak link and you are getting the Best TC & VB on the market.

Dr. , what do you have for options? maybe be a good idea as they really can't voiud your seat tracks or stereo for a TC changed #ad
, is it a DC warranty or an aftermarket . i hear the aftermarket is the way to go , they pay dealers top dollars and don't care to see the broken parts , BOMB to your hearts content and have it fixed by a happy to do it dealer .

if its a DC warranty i would cash it in and put the money in a CD . you can have a repair done with that money if you need it , if not your making some money , i wish i had done that , but i got my moneys worth out my warranty . #ad

M. M. --- I have The basic SLT package, Keyless remote, alarm, CD/stereo. I paied $2,300 for a DC 7 year/100k miles "Service Contract" w/$100 deductable. Thought it was needed for the $4,600 Cummins. Now I'm not so sure it was money well spent.

Thanks for the advice. .

DR.

I had bought a 7/75 ext. warranty last year when I bought my truck and cancelled it within 5 or 6 months. Did a lot of thinking and reading posts on the TDR site and in MHO it was a BIG waste of money. The dealer is literally banking on you not having any problems with the truck, while you are, as I was. It's kinda like a life insurance policy in a way. I got the check back from DC and did exactly what Bob
said,I went and bought a Pacbrake. Money well spent! The 3/36 is sufficient and they are gouging you by actually only giving you 4 years extended coverage over the 3/36.

Just my thoughts.

Phil

Another thought on the extended warrenty - how good is your local dealer? When we bought my wife's 98 dodge, our local dealer was top notch and the warrenty was money well spent because I could get good warrenty service. But in the past 18 months, service has gone so far down hill that I wouldn't take a lawn mower to them, and an extended warrenty wouldn't do me any good. What I am trying to say is that a large part of the value of a warrenty is how well your dealer performs. All dealers are not created equal, and Chrysler hasn't figured out how to police them yet.

DR. CANCEL that warranty , i paid 1370 for my 5 -100 MAX CARE with a 50 deduct , it covers everything but tires , brakes and belts plus gives me a rental ... like it was already said , the engine has a 5-100 k , the 2300 could be better spent , put half in the bank , spend the rest of your ram .

I second the posts that tell you the dealer makes the difference. If you end up needing that warranty for a major repair, you'll be glad you've got it. MM has a good point on the best way to utilize the money you spent on the extended warranty. I'm not very objective about DC at the moment because of the way I was treated by my local dealer, but I have never been a big fan of extended warranties. I didn't pay for the one I have on this truck as it was the 5/100K or $300 and a toolbox. I have saved quite a bit with the problems I have had with seals. Just my . 02 worth.

WOW!!! $2300 bucks for an extended warranty? And a $100 buck deductable! Cash it in ASAP! The selling dealer hosed you on it. Besides,if you are gonna BOMB the truck, you aren't going to want the dealer techs working on or around your modifications. They have a hard enough time fixing a stock truck as it is (let alone one with mods).

As Bob W mentioned, the weak link is the auto trans, but if you're getting the DTT stuff then you no longer need to worry.

Several thoughts and questions:
1. Do you plan to modify your Automatic? If not, I think the extended warranty is a must.
2. I think you were over charged too. I did not pay anything near that amount for the 100k wrap diesel wrap around. It sounds like they may have mistakingly included the engine in the price as if you had purchased the V10.
3. I purchase extended warranties on all new and used vehicles that are still in manu. warranty. So far, every one has more than paid for itself except for my Ram. When I lose the 5th gear nut at 99000 miles (or sooner, I hope), it will pay for itself.
4. A couple of examples -
A. Our '96 Dodge Stratus has an 80k Chrysler extended warranty. At 75,000 miles, it blew a head gasket. No cause was found. It caused other damage. That repair alone was considerably more than the cost of the warranty.
B. Our '96 Blazer 4x4 (purchased new in 1997), has had over approx. $8,000 in repairs done since new, and my 4 wheel drive still does not work. It has never worked correctly. Since I still have about 30,000 miles and 3 years to go, it will be fixed, although I intend to have it charged back to GM and not pay a deductable.
I have not found out yet how to get in contact with the Dallas District Service Mgr. without talking to the dealer. Once I do, I plan to have a working 4WD.

Yes get rid of that warrenty, You over paid badly. DC keeps sending me those warranty offers. I think there is one for 3k. You got to be kidding me DC. I feel sorry for all the people they hose. The cummins has a 100k on it already, up grade the transmission for less than half and your set. Not to mention I much better and more fun truck after the DTT installed. I cant stress enought to you CASH THAT WARRANTY BACK IN!

I Am the only one so far to tell you different... but, I'd have to say do not violate the cummins 100k warranty. and if you do make sure it comes off for dealer visits. I got a 2000 with 50k on it and it nuked itself! read my post to "bombed truck quit running"
