I'm new to this forum not new to Dodge but am searching for my next truck which will be a 03-07 cummins 4x4 quad cab. I'm trying to get acqainted with these trucks and there problems i. e. what to look for or have the truck tested for before I buy. And while I have looked through the forum most of the "should I buy this truck" threads are related to one truck with specific information. I'm looking for a check sheet really; one that I can apply to any truck. Is the G56 better than the NV 6 speed? I know about the ball joints and unit bearing hubs and checking u-joints, and am ok with replacing these components myself. I've read about an injector test that Dodge can do, etc... But what else should I be cautious of? I don't think you can tell if the truck has been "modded" unless the previous owner admits to it but if there is a way to tell please advise. I'll probably end up with a truck near 100k miles, and the fear of injectors and trans problems is the biggest concern mostly because it comes with the highest repair price. Any input on what to listen, feel, look for on a first impression test drive would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Dave

I would make sure you review the service records to ensure the truck has been properly maintained. You can usually tell if the truck has been modified, look for gages, intake exhaust, etc. The NV and G56 are both good manuals, each has it quirks. The lift pump (engine mounted) on the 03 & 04 are terrible.

Also look and ask what the truck was used for, heavy hauling, daily driver and such.

Good luck on finding your next Cummins.
