How much is too much?

I have ordered a new 3500 4x4 HO Diesel from a dealer in Long Beach California. It will be delivered on Jan 25 2004 I have asked Him about the new Diesel engine and He said He new nothing about it. Should I take delivery of the truck or should I reorder The truck with the new Engine, both trucks are close to the same price.

take the old engine!

By all means, if you can, I would take the earlier non-EGR engine. If the engine has EGR in the first truck you ordered, than guess it doesn't make any difference. I'll be driving my '01 for a long time, or until someone figures out how to block the EGR - I can't believe that recirculating exhaust can be good for the engine!

The new Cummins 600 does not have EGR. Do you know when the truck is/was built. If it is built after Jan. 1, it should be the 600. I would definitely want the new engine over a CA detuned one. See the review of the new engine on the TDR home page for specifics.

klenger is right-the old CA engine is bad news - the old 2004 Federal (305/555) engine would be OK, but the old CA engine had EGR, and was weak-it may have had a cat too, I'm not sure about that.

Here is a synopsis of the three 2003-2004 engines:

If it is built after 1/1/04 it's the new engine. If the dealer is clueless get the VIN or VON and call DC to find out when it's built.

Do the CA emissions '03/'04 engines stick out like a sore thumb?

Is there any way to quickly tell if you were to pop the hood and have a look-see?

Matt

OK I don't know any of this for sure, but somewhere on this board somebody said that all Cummins engines have data plates with their HP stamped on it, and somewhere it should have a sticker that says it meets CA emissions for model year 2003 or maybe 2004. The 2004. 5 has plastic end tanks on the intercooler and is the same engine for all 50 states.

You state that the truck is an HO so it has to be the 600. I would make darn sure it is an HO and you will be safe.

You could not buy an 04 HO in Ca. So if its an HO its got to be an 04. 5. 600.

Do this^^^

you'll regret it if you don't. Don't make a foolish decision because you can't wait a little longer.
