I just purchased my first diesel (2001 24v) (150mi. )and had a couple of questions. I have a smell of burning oil coming from engine compartment, is this a protective coating that will burn off or a problem? I cannot locate any smoke. Also, is the oil pressure supposed to drop drantically at idle (from about 3/4 up on press. guage while accelerating to about 1/3 up while coasting). Any reccomendations on mileage for 1st oil change? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Welcome

EDurr; Welcome to TDR and congratulations on your diesel. :)

That is one of the best pieces of machinery around.

The smell is just the protective coating that will burn off. Oil change I would say 3,000 miles or so. Make sure you use a 15w40 oil and use a mopar or Cummins oil filter. Do a search in here about oil and filters, there is lots of info. this is a great site and every one is willing to help that's another advantage of owning the best diesel. Also don't be afraid of beating on that Cummins I mean drive hard like a 17 year old kid, that's what these diesels want for break in. Also do a search on this subject and you'll find bunch and helpfull info. You're oil gauge seems ok.

You should add your signature so we know what you have and in the future we can help you. ;)

Good luck, Fred

The smell could be from the blow by bottle....

Search for threads on the blow by bottle too. Anyway after each oil change you'll smell it for a few hundred miles. It goes away.

Congrats on your new truck. I know I wasn't sure about a lot of things when I first got mine. That's where the TDR is great. Do some searches and you'll find good advice on how to care for, and more importantly, modify your truck.

Don't be afraid to work her hard when new. These motors just love to work.

The smell is probably nothing more than the protective coatings burning off. As far as when to change oil the 1st time. I like to get it out at 1000 miles. 2000 on the next oil. And every 3000 after that. This seems to fit my driving style. Everyone has different thoughts . Do a search and you'll have plenty of reading on this. Use a good 15W40 oil, Delo 400 or Rotella T are both good and both available at Wal-Mart. I also use Fleetgaurd Stratapore filters, part #LF3894. I order them from Geno's Garage, there Phone #(800) 755-1715.

Good Luck,

Welcome Aboard:cool:

Oil smell, what they said ^^^^^^.

Lost of good info here..... Oh one thing, there is something very contagious on this sight. It is called BOMBitis, once you get it there is no cure:D :D

The smell is probably coming from the blow-by bottle in front of engine, lots of guys have removed it because of mess it makes on engine. If you remove it get some 3/4" heater hose and a 3/4" fitting and run it down to front axle.

On filter change get a good strap wrench for filter, some filters were on extremely tight from factory. Also a large freezer bag to put around filter when removing it so you do not make a mess.

Also Geno's has several different oil plugs to choose from that are way better than factory plug( I have the heavy duty one) pick one that you like. They also have all your filters. All The Best!

The smell and the oil has been pretty well covered so I will tell you about the pressure. Yes it is normal for the pressure to drop quite a bit at idle compared to running at 2K RPM or so. Mine runs about 35 PSI at idle and 65 at a steady 2K RPM. If that changes you might have a problem, but it sounds like it is just the way it should be. Hope this helps.
