just bought new 2012 turbo manual trans. has LT245/70r17 thinking about LT285/70r17. sound ok. will they fit ? Is it worth it. Can dealer calibrate out extra hieght. Tires on truck now look puny Truck is an ST regular cab Thanks

yes it is fine i run 285/70/17 bfg and have no problems..... and i gps the speedo is just off by 1- 1- 1/2 miles so i go by that...

Third generation ST trucks also came with 245 tires. I don't know what the rationale is for the smaller tire, besides saving $.

Michelin makes a great tire, Goodyear silent armor looks very aggressive, and is. I recommend going to Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and read their surveys and reviews to find what suits you best.

265/70/17 is the most common stock size for these trucks. You may have more options looking at 265s. If you are looking to fill the wheel wells a bit more, you can go with 285/70/17. They are a touch wider and taller than the 265/70/17, but I wouldn't recommend them if you do a lot of towing with 3. 73 and 48Re trans. It puts your rpms a bit low if pulling heavy. I think my rpms are around 1600-1700 at 65. (off the top of my head)

OP has the 6-speed manual trans, so his clutch will be the weak point. I've run the Toyo Open Country M/Ts and sold the truck with 20k on the tires and they were not half worn yet. Go E-rated 10-ply for sure. I love the stock Michelins, just not aggressive enough for my use. 285s will fill the wheelwell better as well. Are you keeping the stock steel wheels? They are 7. 5" wide compared to 8" for the aluminum wheels, so keep that in mind when you spec out tires. Not sure where you are located, but I've seen a few sets of stock aluminum wheels with and without tires on ebay and craigslist if you are looking to upgrade.

I'll be selling my stock forged aluminum wheels and 265 Michelins soon if anyone around Nor Cal is looking!

thanks for all the imput!!! I dont plan on allot of off road or much big towing just me and my gear going places. Toyo has the only tire I can find with the least agression I really want the 285's. Only other option I see is 20 inch rims but I haven't look into that. My new Dodge is a fair weather truck. I got other vehicles to suck up the winter salt here(Dakota) in the Pocono's. I got 10 years till retirement and I'm hoping to make it last till I'm in the ground. Thanks for the input on the rims also I don't much like the chrome clad that came with the truck either.

Toyo and Nitto both offer 285-70-17 (32. 7") and 285/75-17 (33. 8") in their respective A/T tire lines. Both are quite well regarded for E-rated semi-aggressive tires

I had the Goodyear Silent Armor's on the rear of my dually, they were great snow tires. However, on bare roads, they wore pretty fast. I was doing a lot of travelling then and only got 45K miles out of the tires.

Agreed on the Silent Armor's... they are great in the snow when new (best I personally have used), but they wear very fast, have a lot of "squirm" when new (not good towing), and snow performance fades fast as they wear. I only got about 20k out of my first set and am currently about 10k into my second set (only have them again because of the treadwear warranty and new tires were less than 50% price pro-rated). My second set has the same characteristics and I will be surprised if I get more than 20-25k miles out of them.



To note, I am not that hard on my tires and usually get pretty good life out of them, including 50k out of the stock BFG's.

I also saw a recommendation for Discount Tires, Wheels & ATV | Treadepot.com in a thread and they have great prices. You still have to find a place to mount and balance them locally, but I've found that it's around $100 if you bring your own tires to a shop.

I've been running nit to duragrapplers in 285/70/17 for about the last 130k on my 06 and have been very happy with them. Ride is as nice as and handles as well the Michelin and have better traction in bad conditions
