just bought a 2004 with 145000 miles on it,clean great shape no towing. i would like to know what i need to look at and any problems with that years truck. will use it to pull a 10,8oo # 5th wheel. thats for the help

I have an 04 and from what I just went threw: ball joints. see if you have the new upgraded steering links,front hub bearings,axle joints,all other u joints... . then the obvious Eng/trans PM stuff I assume its 4 x 4... .

Is it 04 or 04. 5? Different engines. 04 is 305 hp, 04. 5 is high output 325 hp. There are a few difference between the two. Others will know more and better than me.

First thing to check, in my opinion, is the lift pump. If it's on the back of the filter canister, I'd think real hard about either replacing it, or at least carrying a spare.

Actually, both are H. O. 's... but the 04. 5 does have a few more ponies. Also has a catalytic converter, improved valve seats, (harder) and an extra firing event resulting in less mileage, (usually)... . among other things.

I have an 04' and thusfar the only "serious" issue I have had has been the lift pump. I just replaced it at 62k miles and now running like a beast again. Hope you enjoy your new truck!

This isn't specific to your model year, but with 145K on it and plans to tow your fiver I'd definitely keep a spare upper and lower radiator hose + clamps in the truck. For about $100 Genos sells a "Boonie Box" that comes in a Stanley toolbox and contains the following:

BOONIE BOX ('03-'07) 5. 9L DODGE-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage
* Pulley Tensioner
* FLEETGUARD - Premium Oil Filter
* FLEETGUARD - Fuel Filter
* GATES hoses
* GATES belt
* SWENCO Posi-Lock Electrical Kit

thanks for the info, just got back from a 3000mile trip no problems and ran like a top getting right at 20 mpg and cosidering that we ran over 80 mph most of the way i am incouraged about pulling and that is next. ::)

I own a 04 3500 dually that pulled a 20K lb trainer for the first 200K miles of its life... . did it very well except for braking... the power disc brakes on the trailer were an issue but the truck worked fine... the truck now has 300K miles and still working fine... .

First brakes at 160K miles with an exhaust brake, one clutch at 180K miles... over all I'm very happy based on the Fords we used to own...
