"The Dana 80's in the 2nd gen Rams are not a true Dana 80 either. They are a hybrid. I am guessing that means they are cheaper/lighter then a true Dana 80... I know theres someone on here that knows the difference of the hybrid and the true Dana 80. "

Already been covered - but will comment/add that the "hybrid" Dana 80 applies primarily to the EXTERNAL construction, axle tube as such to match Dodge mounts, and has NOTHING to do with any sacrifices in internal component strength or quality...

I also have a theory as to WHY DC switched from Dana to the new axles - they have been aggressively CHISELING (blackmailing) all their suppliers (including CUMMINS!) to reduce their selling price - by about 20% last I read - I suspect Dana refused to knuckle under and reduce their price, which would likely have required them to also reduce QUALITY - so NOW we get the new axles - probably at a cheaper price than the dana - do you suppose the NEW outfit made quality cuts to meet DC price demands, HMMMmmmmm? ;) :)

It's my understanding ( which HAS been known to be faulty... ) that the axle issue was to meet DC needs/requirements to mate to the rest of the running gear - not much point to use larger diameter axles to mate to smaller outer hubs, etc. - so yes, "modified" - to properly or sensibly mate with the rest of the running gear, not to cheapen the axle or degrade the differential itself...

Don't hear of many AXLE problems - but DIFFERENTIALS can be a different issue!

Actually, they are both the same axles (286RBI), just different hubs (for the dually) they are both hybrids, and are identical other than the hubs.

Looks like DC wanted to upgrade the differential from the Dana 70 to the 80, while still using the same outer running gear - thus the adaptation - another money saving issue - guess it's OK, not heard of any problems purely related to the axles/hubs...
