Anybody ever heard of the Holeset Super 40 turbo? Any experience with it? It is a 'beefier' HX-40. I just ordered one today, and am hoping that I get along with it ok. I have a feeling I'm going to miss the bottom end quick spool-up of my stocker. Any input would be appreciated.

I ran a CityDiesel "Hotrod 40" for a time at 366hp. I felt the loss of bottom end spool wasnt worth what little extra air the 40 provided. EGT's were still past 1500* but got there just a little slower. I dont think a HX40 is much good on a 12valve past 350-400hp.

What's my best bet for a turbo that spools good on the bottom end but still provides more top end than a stocker? I was wanting a B-1 or an Edge Jammer but they were both unavailable. This turbo was basically all I could get my hands on.

I'd call HighTechTurbo and see if they have any HTB2's availible. They're competatively priced to a modified HX40 and I think you'd be happier. Dont get me wong a 40 will work, but I just dont think they flow enough on a 400hp(you're close if not there) 12valve. What is your elevation, I'm at 4500' and that was a large part of why I lost some bottom end with the 40. At lower elevations spool was acceptable, but I still hit 1500* too easy IMO.

I'm below 1000'. I looked at the HTB2 but wasn't sure how much better it spooled on the bottom end compared to the Super 40. I liked the way the stocker spooled on the bottom end but hated the way it got hot as hell when I ran above 80mph. Also, with my 4:10s there isn't a lot of top end hp to gain before i run out of rpms. Twins would be sweet, but I'm a poor man. I think the main difference between the Super 40 and the HX40 is the design of the compressor wheel.

I've driven trucks with HX40s, modded HX40s, and a B1 equipped truck. About 2 weeks agao I drove a super 40 truck, and it is the closest thing to a B1 I've seen, but didn't have quite the topend boost.

All the HX40 trucks I've driven have been disappointing, but the Super 40 spooled great. If you floor it off idle it's awful, as is any big turbo, but rolling along and dipping into it it really gets going fast. If I thought it was big enough to support my new setup I'd have bought one already. I don't see why anyone would even consider an HX40 after having driven a truck with a Super 40.

For what it's worth the Super 40 I drove was on an 03 with injectors and a downloader. All the trucks I mentioned (4 with hx40s, 1 with a super 40, one with stock) are in the 350-400 hp range (my previous setup being the stocker @ about 350?). The B1 truck had about 550+hp (650 on a Mustang, but that was sketchy) and WAY more fuel.

Thanks for the link. How did your dv's and GSK go?

You're welcome.

Haven't gotten around to ordering the GSK or the socket for the DV yet. The 191s are still waiting in the box. Been really busy in the big truck, moving corn.

WaynesWorld has a HTB2 ('gated 12cm2) on his '96. He's up around 450hp. Even with a Piers cam, he still making high EGTs on the top end. It spools like stock.

With the adjustments I've made lately to my truck, It has helped spool-up quite a bit. Still a lag pig on the bottom end, 'til it starts to spool up. Once it does, you're gone. :D That, and the guy behind you can see again. :-laf

I wonder how much that cam helps the spool?

There was one member running 420HP on an HTB2 with a 14 housing and his EGT's were peaked at 1325.

I'm guessing the smaller 12 housing would add maybe 200 degrees at that power level. I'm sure HTT could give an idea on how the EGT's would compare between the two housings.

Thanks for relating your experience with the Super 40. It makes me feel better about my choice.
