Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) New User - Dead Truck, What to do??

I'm driving home last night doing about 55 mph. My truck starts sputtering then quits. I wait about 5-min and the thing starts back up & I make it home. So this AM I'm going to work and it happens again about 3 mi from the house but this time it's dead. What do you think? Advice please, this is freaking me out. My truck is an '01.

First off welcome aboard, I am sure that we can figure out the problem.

The first thing to do is replace the fuel filter. Also check to see if you have any check engine codes. With diesels the first thing is ti check the filter. also leave the fuel cap loose to make sure that the tank vent is not plugged.

It could be many things, but I bet your lift pump went bad a long time ago, and took out your injection pump. Hope its not true (unless your under warrantee, then its free)

First off, welcome aboard. Take a few minutes to set up your signature so we can all see what you have, and any modifications that have been done to your truck. This will help us in figuring out your problem. This is the best place on the net to hang out.

Bsanders - Welcome aboard!



Take a look at the Code P 1693 post in this section (24 Valve). My truck is acting similar to yours. I've had it (see signature) since new and it has 45,000 miles now. If mine's the LP (lift pump), it will be covered under the 100,000 mile engine warranty.



To check codes, in case you don't know. Put your key in the ignition, click forward one notch toward "on" to the "off" position (but not on yet). From that position quickly cycle the key "ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON. " On the 3rd "ON," leave it in that position and be watching the digital odometer area.



What will show up is, "Pnone" if there are no codes.



Otherwise, codes will show up like, "P0500" or "P1693" etc.



Do that, read the "Code P 1693" post (its well worth the time it will take) and tell us what yours says.

My experience with sputtering....

BSanders, glad to have a new member. You have found a wealth of information here at the TDR page ! My 2001 sputtered and quit. It would turn over, but never picked up and started. Turns out it was out of fuel ! My dash gauge read half of a tank, but there was zero in there... I lost the prime and had to be towed in. After topping it off and repriming, she came to life. So, in my case, a faulty gauge and/or sender unit. Since yours quit and then re-started, this probably does not apply to you. But now you know to be on the look-out for the gauge gremlin

Could be the fuel filter, or water in the fuel, drain a little diesel into a glass jar and check for water.



Can you here the lift pump come on when you turn the key on?

Someone to help with this will make it easier.

A quick way to see if you have fuel pressure, take the cap off the schrader valve on the vp-44, (drivers side of engine towards the front) push in the valve like on a tire, with the key in the run position, it might take two people as the lift pump will cycle pretty quickly in some cases.

As far as codes go, when my lift pump died it generated a P0230, still don't know if this was due to lift pump or a wiring problem, the code that is.
