Check Gauges and Check Engine when backing up?

What should look for when seeking out a competent dealer mechanic…?

I just put an Edge EZ on, only driven a few miles with it so far and like the way the truck shifts and the added power. Being that the truck has very few miles on it (1800) and there is not much wear on the trans. , would it be good to switch out the valve body for an aftermarket one, or just run it til it blows and replace the whole trans? Any suggestions on brands of valve bodies if that is the case?

After selling my FORD and going to a DODGE, you might understand why. I was just happy the FORD started every morning...

I just like to be proactive (I guess that would be the word)

Basically the trans was not made for that 65 extra HP... . eventually its going to take a toll on the trans... what happens to you if you add 65 lbs of body weight to yourself, right now?

Now a question for you CUMMINZ:

What box do you have on your truck? Is it an auto? If yes, have you done anything to the trans?

Cummins Thunder: Does Michael have a black 05 quad cab short box? Was he down at the Nowel Thomas Drags in Houston this past November?

There was one of these trucks down there, and it ran 13. 3 all day long, and the guy said he had 2 boxes stacked, trans work and a turbo. He also had hot rod diesel on the side of his truck, just wondering if that was him?

Thanks for the input guys.

I have a TST that I run on 3&3 and pull a 36' Cedar Creek. transmission is stock except for Amsoil in transmission. I have had no problems with transmission. I just drive it with some sense.

CUMMINZ

Dave, the 48RE is a much better transmission than the 47RE. It can handle more power and is more durable. I only tow about 7k and do not run my TST over 4x4 while not towing. The trans does just fine.

With only an EZ, you are not going to hurt the 48RE...

My only real complaints with the 48RE... I would like at times to be able to lock out O/D

Also, this trans could use a tighter torque converter which, I will be having one put in by DTT. . As you know, a valve body and torque converter should go hand in hand.

Cheers, Bill

That is what I like to hear. Thank you guys very much... ...

BTW: CUMMINZ nice truck! What did the 315 size tires do for you as far as fuel economy and power loss?

Cumminz, stupid question... . what do you mean by "drive it with some sense?" I understand no 4wd power brake launches... . but other than that what do you mean??? Can you punch it off the line (not powerbreaking)??? and not have to worry about the transmission? Or do you have to wait until the things at 50mph and locked to get on it?... . I want a box, but am waiting until i have enough $ to get the box and some transmission work... .

On the 600 trucks above level 3 you are risking a very short trans life :-laf

Giachino--I don't think I asked a question????

What part of "I just drive it with some sense" don't you understand?

CUMMINZ

CUMMINZ, I was asking (the stupid question). .

If you read my post (realizing I wasnt trying to be a jerk)... . the question still stands... . I'm not used to diesels and have never had a power box on one... . dont know if "common sense" means stay out of it at low rpm, no powerbraking,... . or what? Maybe it's a stupid question, but I'd still like an answer please.

With out gauges it will be very hard to drive it "with some sense". The diesel doesnt really give a lot of indication of working hard. The boost level and egt will give you a better idea. High boost, high egt=short trans life :)

He means boost over ~30 and temps over ~1300 for extended periods. Its is almost impossible to do this stock unless your towing your house up the mountain. With a box you MUST have gauges especially with stock turbo and transmission. With my SP diesel box it pegs my 30 PSI boost gauge but i have yet to see any temps over 1300 but by that time i was moving at a very quick pace and was at the top of the hill.

A good rule is ~20% over stock its time to start beefing up the transmission and stoy off the boost launches, they are a blast to perform but it hurts the transmission.

I see temps of 1350-1400 almost every time I tow our 5er. Do you think my 315's could be causing higher EGT's?

I have also seen high egt temps. With the truck empty, running up the road to town I see the egts hit just over 1000 post turbo. The road has a grade to it, climbs 500' vertical in 5 miles. The trans likes to keep the TC locked and the rpms and boost are down causing the egts to soar. It can't be hurting too much though as everything except the 285 tires is stock. I can't get anywhere near that towing heavy up a grade. The boost stays up, the rpms stay up and the egts sit at 800 or so post turbo for the whole pull. That is at max rated combined wieght, maybe a touch over, on a five mile long 6% grade. GET GAUGES, like Bob4x4 says, there is little indication from the sound and feel of the engine as to what is really happening.

You guys are being really counter-intuitive and misleading. EGT and boost level is a function of fuel, RPM and air intake flow. These numbers, while related to power & torque, are not directly correlated. A perfect example is if you add a bigger turbo and more fuel. Your EGT and boost level may not be any higher than stock, but if you're making an extra 150hp/350ft/lbs you're definately tearing the transmission up.

To answer the question-- driving the transmission smart is mostly about keeping the torque below the limitations of the torque converter and lockup clutches, not punching the gas hard at low RPMs (give transmission a chance to build pressure), and keeping the heat down on the fluid.

You should be able to run your EZ at highest setting and probably not hurt the transmission. You'll hurt your injectors with that much pressure though, keep it on the first or second setting. If you need more power, get a fuel duration box or different injectors.

Dave - I will be putting a DTT VB in my wifes truck soon. The VB will ofcourse as you know increases line pressure and improves the shifting. Anything I (or you) can do to extend the life of the transmission sure wont hurt. Plus when you do rebuild, you will alaready have the VB.

John,

I recon you are saying as I did "use common sense"

CUMMINZ

Dude, did i do something to **** you off? I was asking what the **** common sense means... . (asked twice)... as it means nothing to me in this scenario, so I was asking for clarification... . specifically if your not supposed to punch it hard at low rpms.....comming from gassers that's ok..... apparently not on diesel's...

John hit it on the head. Thank you John!
