Just replaced my VP44 with an upgraded (FedEx) VP44 from Blue Chip Diesel. I also replaced my lift pump with a new FASS pump. Took it for a test drive around the block and I've got no power. I'm geting a 216 injection timing error code.

Checked power model connections and even romoved PM and no diff. Now what do I do???

2001 2500 ext. cab w/5spd manual. and Ulitmate PM.

No expert here, but it makes me think of this - have heard you can put

the key in the wrong way and set codes, also has to be the key that comes

with the individual pump... Maybe someone else can elaborate?

the key on the pump shaft, I am speaking of :)

Yep, if the key is not matched to the 44, or is installed wrong, you will have a problem, no different than having the timing retarded in a gasser. If you are sure the key is correct, I don't know what to tell you, other than a possible "bad" 44????

All the newer vehicles have the OBDII system, so you either have to use a scanner to clear it, or so many key cycles will do it, can't remember how many. The stored code doesn't explain the lack of power though.

You guys hit the nail on the head!

My TDR membership has been the best investment I ever made! You guys hit the nail on the head. I unscrewed the breather cover and with a flashlight and a mirror I discovered that the key fell out while I was installing the pump. I used the key form the old pump and stood on my head a watch as I reinstalled the pump. I got it in this time! Oo.

Now the big question is where did it go? I was hoping that it got washed down into the oilpan the first couple of trips around the block. I can take a magnet from an old computer hard drive and try to fish it out. :(

Any ideas?

You can't use the key from the old pump. The keys are matched to the pump. You'll have to pull the timing cover off the front of the engine to find the key. Make sure if you find it to reinstall it with it in the 12o'c;ock position and use a mirror and a flashlight to make sure it's all lined up.

You may still have a problem, the key needs to be matched to the pump :(

Your pump shop may be able to set you up with the correct key from the #s on the pump.

Just when I thought I was done.

Matched keys?! Crap! :{ Is it safe to drive to a pump shop?! I'm ready to blow the dang thing up at this point.

Well, if it hasn't caused any problems yet, there's a chance it did get washed into the pan. But if it didn't, there's some really important gears up front that don't like stuff in them (as in "killer dowel pin"). You could rip apart the timing gears and crack the front case.

Hate to say it, but if it was mine I'd take the front cover off to make sure.

Pump Key

I wouldn't even start it much less drive it. Without the correct key it won't run right and it could be close to the gears behind the timing cover and could cause major problems if it gets into anything with teeth. I'd be pulling the pump and the timing cover to see. Timing cover isn't that difficult. Hardest thing is taking the harmonic balancer off and if you've got a puller it's no big deal.

Don't have to remove the radiator, but I usually take a thin piece of sheet metal and cover the back of it so if anything slips you don't damage it. I've got a piece I bought at home Depot and just use aluminum tape to hold it in place.
