Turns out that the injection pump was the problem. My truck seems to run stronger than it has in a long long time. I installed the pump myself with no problems. Took about three and a half hours. I did a couple things twice that I shouldn't have. Anyway, my question is regarding a new noise. I have no loss of boost pressure, in fact I think I get a hair more than on the old VP44. However when I begin to build boost pressure, maybe around twelve to fifteen pounds, I get a sound similar to a high pitched whistle. Not like the whistle my turbo has always made. Sort of like it but just higher pitched. What could be making this noise? It didn't exist before I changed out the pump. I'm pretty sure fuel pumps don't make any noise like this do they?

outback diesel:

The first time i heard that noise i called star (i was working at dealers at the time), and argued my case for a new turbo.

they sent me one and when i went to put it on a little voice in my head told me to tighten the clamps on the charge air cooler tubing so i did and the problem was solved(all except calling star back and eating Crow

anyways check that all your charge air clamps are TIGHT.

since you had to remove the cac hose from the air horn and remove air horn i would check clamps, did you replace the gskts for the air horn and grid heater.

good luck.

No I didn't change the gaskets for the air horn and heater. I usually loosen the top clamp at the air horn so I can turn it the other direction to help get more room to work. I will check all the fittings and replace the gaskets. Don't you usually lose boost pressure when you have a leak like that though?

Outback, it doesn't take a very big leak to make a whistle. I found out a couple of my boots were leaking when I did a leak test yet I was able to hit 32-33lbs with only DD2 injectors. I would definitely replace the air horn/heater grid gaskets, they are easily damaged but luckily they are pretty cheap (get 'em from Cummins, not Dodge, I'm sure you know that!).

Good job on the VP44 replacement, that is good to know it is do-able :)

Thanks Vaughn, I am going to stop by Cummins today and pick up new gaskets. The pump job was easier than I thought it would be. I think the offset 3/4 wrench was the tool of the day. Surprisingly the pump was more expensive at Cummins for once. They wanted over two thousand, that may have been without figuring on a core return though. Dodge here was 1167 with a core. If any of you install a new pump or if the dealer does it for you, make sure you get the latest revision which is 027. I heard that Dodge is still selling some of the older models.

Outback,

You must have got a reman VP44 from the Dodge dealer for that cheap... . Did they tell you it was new or a reman? I think new vp44's from the stealer are normally $3-4k!

They didn't say whether it was new or a remanufactured pump. I assumed it was for a new one. I can't believe how GD expensive they are. I mean, when you buy your truck, whats the option price to buy the diesel 3600? 4000? So that price plus whatever a gasser is worth. What does a brand new 5. 9 cost? Why should the Inj. pump alone cost a third of that? Somebody is making way too much money. By the way what is everyone paying for a diagnostic? Damn dealer charged me 75. 00 to pull the codes the other day. I wanted to be as sure as I could before buying a new pump. It hurts just to sit in my truck and drive home after paying the dealer their terribly inflated prices. I don't think there are many people who really know these trucks either. They try to tell you something and you know it's BS before they finish what they are saying. I would much rather diagnose and fix my own problems if possible. As I am sure 99 percent of you agree, if you don't still have a warranty that is.
