Looking for a set of new wheels and tires for the truck. I want to go a hair wider but not so much that tires are out beyond the body, a litte is ok. Would like to go up to a 285. I also have a truck camper so that weight needs to be considered, about 2300lbs in the bed.

What size wheels and tires would work for me?

Been running Michelin LTX 285/75R16 for 5 years now. They are great tires, wear good and handle the sand at Hatteras NC 97% of the time without airing down. I run them with 50psi front, 45psi rear.

Most I've hauled with them was a 8K lbs. on a lowboy and never had a problem.

the best wheels for keeping the tires under the fenders are the stock 2nd gen alloys (16x8). not many aftemarket wheels have the offset necessary for our trucks. stock is ~6" backspacing. maybe powdercoat a set of stock 2nd gen or 3rd gen 17" wheels and get something different and fit the way you want!

I'm running BFG 285/70 17 on stock steel rims. The tires are the AT style and are the new Load Range E, purchased at CostCo this past May (2009).

are the 3rd gen steel wheels 8" wide? i know the 2nd gen steelies are 7" (or less) and BFG recomends a 7. 5" wheel minimum for the 285s. lots of guys run them anyway, but i got some terrible sway while towing when i used undersized wheels. just my $0. 02

I ended up buying 285/75/17 duragrapplers & reusing the stock wheels. I had a set of 18x9 american racing wheels with 325/60/18 toyo AT's on it----would have cost at least another $100 per tire to reshoe the 18" rims, god help you if you bought 20"s, those START at $400 apiece. Like the looks, but anything bigger than the 17"s costs a lot more

Walker Evans has 17x8. 5 and 20 inch wheels in black or polished also with simulated beadlocks and up to 6 inch bachspace. Nice wheels, $325 each.
