New Wheels?

Hey Guys,



I need another set of wheels for my truck to mount some summers on.



the truck is a '93 W250



I've been running 235/85R16 tires, which are fine but I wouldn't mind going up to something a little wider in the future, like maybe a 255 or 265. A 31" tire seems fine but do you guys know if 33" tires will rub the fenders etc? Can you mount a 235/85R16 on an 8" wheel?



What is the stock rim width and offset (distance from the mounting face to wheel centerline)? I think the width is 6", which is crazy narrow, but maybe you guys can correct me.



I'm concerned that any wheels I buy are going to stick out past my fenders and then rub when I turn. Thoughts?



Summary:

Can you mount 235/85R16 tires on a 8" wide wheel?



Can you mount wider tires, like a 265/75R16 on a 7. 5" wheel or do you have to go right up to 8"?



Are there any problems with running 8" wheels and 31" or 33" tires on a stock W250?

The website says the offset is -5mm but I have no idea what the dodge wheels are... I'm thinkin' like 2"

I was in the same boat so I went with these. They are 265/70/17". I love the profile, size, and width. Fits the truck right.

The stock rims should be 7. 5 to 8 inches IIRC. They will mount a 265/75 or a 235/85 with no issues. I have run both on a 2x4 and 4x4.



An 8" rim is adequate for a 37" tire if the tire section width is generally within 3. 5" of the wheel. The close to the section width of the tire the wheel is the flatter the tread is on the ground. A 2" difference is better but not absolutely critical.



A 33" tire should work without issues. You MIGHT get rub at full turn and you bounce it hard. A 35x12. 5 tire needs a lift to not rub constantly.



Watch the backspacing rather than offset. That will align your tire and wheel setup better for the ball joints and turning. A 4-4. 5 backspacing is about right for what you want. IIRC, stock is 4. 5" on an 8" wheel. If your tire goes to 11. 5 to 12. 5 the back spacing needs to be reduced or they rub on springs. A 10 to 11" tire should be fine on a stock back spaced wheel.



Some of this will depend on the state of the fornt suspension. If it is sagging you will see more rubbing on the larger tires.

I'm almost 100% that the stock wheels are 6". Everything I've read on the net says 6" and when I got my current set of tires I had to go with 235/85R16's because the wheels were too narrow for a wider tire.

Ok, well those wheels I'm looking at have a -5mm offset so on an 8" rim the backspacing should be about 3. 8"

The Ramchargers were fit with up to a 31" tire

To fit a 33 of the 12. 50 size I was doing 1. 5 lift springs

The trucks were about the same. I don't recall any steel factory

Dug out an old 93 fsm interestingly it does not list wheel sizes. The size will be stamped on your oem wheel if it is in good enough shape to read may be another matter. Did find this http://www.originalwheels.com/dodge-wheels/trucks250rims-1993.php

Thanks Bob. I have a very sneaky suspicion that these wheels will work but I'm hoping to hear back from some more people before I throw down an order.

I thought the wheels are 6-6. 5" if my memory serves. They are pizza cutters. Did not think they were that wide.

I thought mine were 7. 5" but it has been a while and several projects ago. Could be confused about what wheel was what width by now.



A 8" wheel is a good match for all the tires suggested if the section widths are close.

Anyway, where can a guy get some extra long, acorn style, chrome lug nuts for a reasonable price?

Is the stud thread pitch 1/2-20?

You also need to make sure the shoulder on the wheel stud does not interfere with the lug nut tightening down. Not all wheel studs are exact for the configuration of the wheels. It is easy to get a stud that fits everything stock but will interfere when you go to an aftermarket wheel and nut.

No idea what you're talking about... . as far as I can tell, there is no shoulder on the studs...

If you can't see the shoulder where it comes thru the hub then you don't have a problem. Some wheel studs have an extended shoulder that will cause the aftermarket wheels to not sit flat on the hub.

Thread SHOULD be 1/2"-20..... Some could be 9/16. Umm, what style lug nut do you want? Usually, they're around 1. 75-1. 9" long, and can be 3/4 or 7/8" in size, the smaller with recessed nut walls and a bulged area where the seat holds the wheel on..... The really long nuts, @ 2. 25-2. 36" long, are usually 7/8", and that's what is used on the Fords F350 single wheels with the really long wheel studs, in 9/16. The 1st gen Dodge trucks can have either size stud, so you'll have to check it... Both '91s I had were 1/2", but my '93 was 9/16 before I made it a dually... ... you should be able to tell with just a tape measure or caliper. THEN, I should be able to get you a better price..... I usually sell the 1/2" short for @ $1. 00 ea, with a little for shipping... . Security nuts sell a little higher. Ebay might be a good source, too, as I might have to charge a little more for Canadian shipping..... And I might could drop ship... just let me know if you need some help. $106 is ridonkulous. For that you should get all new center caps, too!!!

Thanks for all the replies guys. Found I could get a socket in there with 3/4" drive nuts and I found a guy in town who sold me the nuts for $0. 80/piece



Wheels are on, they look great, I'm happy



For the record, the 16"x8" wheels with 235/85R16 tires and a -5mm offset work great!

Watch carefully when getting lug nuts. You really gotta use care when you pick new nuts. (Hmmm. Naw, no comment... ):-laf

I had a buddy of mine give me a box of them and I was thrilled. I soon discovered that the front taper that contacts the rim when you tighten it was the wrong pitch angle and really skinny. They didn't fit the rim right at all. Hence, they still live in a box.
