have read more than 200 posts in the last three days... ..... im going to look at a 91 this weekend. found out all the things i should check out, but, the one thing that worries me is the pump. i have read that the pumps up to 91. 5 need rebuilt/replaced around every 50,000, are there any other years that have a more durable pump, thank in advance... BILL

ps i already own mercedes diesels and love them... ... ... :D

I have never heard that any of our pumps are only good for 50,000 miles, once in a while someone has a bad pump with that low of miles but that's pretty rare. I think you're getting some bum info from someone. Maybe they are thinking of some of the F##D pumps from their early motors???????

Personally I would try to find a little newer truck that is already intercooled and has the crossflow radiator, those are the 2 things that make a major difference on how much power you can get out of one of these with out temperature problems.

Happy Shopping to you,

Caleb

I second the 91. 5 model. Best to find one already intercooled and upgraded radiator, and head. Look for the tamper caps on the adjustment points on the injection pump. Governor, full fuel, and smoke screw. Best if these have been left alone all its life. A 'virgin' woohoo. . I have two of them, non-intercooled virgins, well not the 89 no more:D

bgilbert I dont understand how you can have a stock pickup especially after you found this web site.

Welcome to the TDR

Like all forms of mechanical items. Some pumps die early, some don't. Its just the luck of the draw. I bought my truck with 92k showing on the clock and confirmed by carfax. It had a brand new injection pump on it at that time. From the looks of it. It hadn't been on more than a week or so. It didn't even have any water stains on it yet. I was very pleased to see it on there. I knew I wouldn't have to worry about pump problems for a while with it. :D

What ever you model look at. Just look at the overall condition and don't worry about something that isn't broken yet.

thanks for all the info!!, i guess i am trying too hard to find all the areas to look at. my list of things to check for, not sure if it is a 91. 5 yet:

1, intercooler

2,steering box/ frame /radiator mount

3, pinion bearing play

4,cowl cracks, floor water leaks

5, test drive for transmission noise (5-spd)

6,injection pump/ repaired or replaced

7, brakes/wheel bearing service history

8, fluid change history crankcase/transmission/rear

9, thermostat housing/ head gasket leaks

Howdee! Happy shopping. I hope you git one half as good as mine, you'll love it. Even if it's not exactly what you want, don't pass up a well maintained truck.

What Greenleaf said...

And don't pass one up because it's not intercooled... . they do have definate advantages over the intercooled trucks!!;)

For example, I NEVER have a problem with snow and ice collecting on my hood!!!:D

Good luck.

Hey, neither do I. Wait, I have to GET snow and ice (even in winter) for that to be an issue, dont I? Oops. Dew dries off pretty quick in the AM, though it wasnt much of a problem in the high country.

Anyway, good luck on your purchase. For a nonIC truck, stock or otherwise, you can almost count on a head gasket around 200-250K. Mine went at 242K; replaced at 253K when I eliminated all other possibilities for that weird noise under load. Hey, parts that wear out or break make EXCELLENT excuses for BOMBing ;) :D Oo.

Well after about a year here and a stock dyno run with Philip watching, I had to tinker with the pump and add POD'S to my 89. With the 91 I've only rotated the fuel cone to max depth and maybe a hair on the governor screw, one click to the starwheel, but no full fuel adjustment yet, as it has no gauges and a 727 transmission:D. So I guess one might not call it stock, but it doesnt smoke hardly at all and doesnt have the balls like my 89 does, so thats stock to me.

I was just pointing out, that one would be happy to see a virgin pump on the truck one was looking to buy. Instead of a raped pump that some youngen ran like hell, wide open full fuel and no gauges.
