well i went to see it sat. clean truck! for a 91. 5. all original, except banks exhaust and k&n filter, it has a utility body:D and all the records since new,has had engine oil changes and valve adjustments at normal intervals up to now 200,000 mi. many other maintenance items have been kept up, ok now the bad news, it has the getrag transmission, i drove it home, about 65 miles and up to 80 mph and no groaning sounds from the transmission, however i do hear a bit of noise at just above idle in first and second gear... ... ... . should i drain and add synthetic fluid to halt any further wear? BILL

Bill,

Congrats on what sounds like a good deal. The Getrag in and of itself isnt so bad- I've had 5 of them. I woudl drain ALL the fluids, from the radiator to the rear diff, and refill with the good stuff. Check to see if there are any leaks, before you go to a synthetic; if there are leaks, they will become more apparent with the synthetic. Same for the rear diff and the wheel seals, and pinion seal. When you drain and redill the transmission, put 5qts in it. You can take out the top PTO cover bolt and put the oil in there. the overfill will submrege the upper gearshaft, the lack of which is the #1 cause of Getrag failures. Also keep an eye on the inside of the inlet hose from the filter to the turbo- I had a few issues with a K&N (actually, 3 of them), and have gone back to a paper filter for now. When I get the $$$, I plan to get an aFe ProGard7 and report with results. The Banks exhaust sounds like a good deal to get with the truck 3-1/2" vs stock 3"; Good to about 400HP.

Now you just need to fill in your signature so we know what you got. Go to user control panel, then clik on edit profile.

Welcome to the TDR. I see you are on here almost everytime I am, so you seem to be one step ahead of the game.

The gear noise you hear is what I'd call normal for the miles and age.

Daniel,

thanks for the info, i'm wondering what type of trouble you had with the k&n filter in the pre turbo tube, i would like to avoid any troubles there?i will drain all fluids and overfill the GETRAG.

tried to update my profile we will See if it works.

I woudl drain ALL the fluids, from the radiator to the rear diff, and refill with the good stuff.

Daniel, I think you forgot to say, go all the way back past the rear diff to the blinker fluid resevoir. CGauthier- Carl will agree on that one:D

Bill, sounds like you got a good one, did you look to see if the injection pump has been touched? Tamper covers still in place over the adjustment screws? Sounds like you have most of your bases covered on draining and refilling everything. Plenty of good reading, resources here in archives to give our trucks TLC, the most since it left the factory. Good luck.

Bill

Sounds like you done good.

Thats the first year of the good ones. Intercooled and better oiling.

Don't panic over a few noises.

Change your fluids to synthetic. DO IT NOW LEAKS OR NOT.

most modern synthetics have seal softners added to prevent leaks and I have had a few cured themselves over the years.

Over fill that transmission with some 10w-40w synthetic. Get an extra quart in there at least and add a magnetic drain plug.

Maybe get some gauges and later on a 16mm turbo housing and your set for another 100K

Darn it Bill, the blinker fluid completely slipped my mind. My blinkers never get used, so I just forget to check the fluid level. Kinda like the brakes- never check or use them either

Ok, now onto the K&N. I started a thread a few months ago (I tried doing a search, but I am having troubles with my ISP &/or the forum) about the K&N filters we had put in Mom's pickup, and neither of them filtered the super fine dust around here. We live in a farming area, and the dust from the fields is really fine, and with the hunidity, it hangs in the air, making a smoggy haze almost. We quit running the K&N, but lot of people have had zero issues with them. I had no problem in Colo with them in CTDs or a 6. 9 Ford. Just something to keep an eye one. Check the inside of the fliter hose, and clean it out if needed. Then after about 1000mi, recheck it. If it passes the white glove test, you're good to go. If not, get a BHAF or some other paper filter.

this is a great forum!

i dont think the pump has been messed with, but i dont know enough to really tell, looks stock.

i had some problems early on with k&n filters also, but found i was not putting the second spray of filter treatment on after the first dose soaked in.

i will have time to drain the fluids next week, too busy right now:(

but at least i can start it up and listen to that mighty cummins roar:D

many questions and tinkering to come, thanks all!! BILL
