I have a 2001 auto with the HY35 turbo, I only have the EZ and the 22 shell blocking the waste gate and I am see 30 to 31 lbs of boost. (unloaded) I spoke with a Diesel shop about blocking the waste gate and they told me that it was very bad and that the HY35 would not handle much more that 20lbs of boost and pushing it to 30lbs would cause the bearings to go out. I have read on this site that the hy35 was in its range up to 32lbs, but I can find this information no where. Can someone clear this up?

Thanks for the links . . but I guess what I would like to know is if this is safe for this turbo to turn that type of boost. I have look all over this site and found a lot of "I have heard"s and I have had no luck finding anything on the holset site. . I called a holset distributer and he told me that the HY35 would come apart. it was not designed to High Performance applications and told me I need to buy an HX40. . he did tell me that disabling the wastgate was a bad thing and that if I really wanted to I could adjust where the waste gate opens. ????

Just really don't want to trash a $37000 truck :-(

OK I spoke to Holset directly and they said that the waste gate on the hy35 starts to open at 26lbs, said the effience of the turbo was around 28 or 29 (possibly 30) . . they did not recommend blocking the waste gate either and also said the with just the EZ I should consider an HX35 turbo. My next question is if most of the trucks with HX turbos and just an EZ are seeing 26-28lb of boost do I really need to disable the waste gate on my hy35??? Has anyone looked at the EGTs with just the EZ and no blocked waste gate?

DC or not DC?

My own Ram was similarly challenged and DC have been pretty tight lipped about ever since, why they went from the HX35 unit to the HY35 unit for the early 2001 model year autos, before reverting back to the HX 35 units in the 2001. 5 model year.

A replacement/exchange HX35 unit /12cms (stock is 9cms) does the trick for me and lots of fun :D:D. I've put on more than 6,000 miles since the upgrade and would do the same without thinking twice, which is what DC did but have never to the best of my knowledge, ever justified the about turn ... . go figure!!

Instead of blocking or disabling it why not just use a spring to "slow" down its opening? With a spring on mine I could see 25lbs easy with the PE(not EZ) turned "off". Turned on, could get it upto 30lbs.

Do a search on StakeMan, in this forum and you'll see his method. Works wonderfully, and removed with one snip of wire cutters.
