newbie diesel question... tachometer?

I'm just wondering where the tach on a diesel gets its signal?

Depends on the model year of your CTD. Pre 91. 5 you would have to use the alternator windings as your signal... My 89 had that system. After 91. 5 the engines had a crank trigger to run the other electronics in the PCM and that gives the tach signal.
