I bought a `97 3500 extend cab on wednesday(1-26-05). I have put 402 miles on since then. Today I got home from work ( I have a work truck) and went to the dealer, then to a friends house. I left it running while my friend looked at it. All of the sudden, for some wierd reason I looked under the truck :--) There was about 1/2 gallon of oil on the ground, with oil pouring off of the crossmember. I can see it's somewhere around the injection pump area, right above the powersteering pump. We shut it down checked the oil added some more. Fired it back up while I looked at the underneath but I can't see where it's coming from! It was wasn't pouring at idle just a fast drip. WTF!! Thanks for any help!

sorry to hear this. Welcome to the TDR.

like forrest said it sounds like the KDP might be the issue. check the torque on the front gear cover. they may be loose. good luck

if your not familiar with the KDP do a search. :(

Was it serviced right before you bought it? Check the oil filter.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that its something simple.

I got in touch with a friend of a friend (dealer tech). He came and looked at it. Thank God it's only the oil sending unit!! He had a little inspection mirror and a flashlight. Laying on his back, engine running, he found it in about 3 minutes. He is the greatest. I am going to look into the KDP. Thanks

good to here that the problem isnt serius. as you know by now there are 2 ways to fix the KDP. jig it or tab it. i would recomend tabbing it cause you can check and retorque the rest of the bolts under the cover. also replace the seal while your in there. good luck. you will find that the members here are very helpful and there is an amazing amount of knowlage on this site.

good luck to ya

E-mail me at -- email address removed -- for instructions on how to tab it.

Good story, but get used to the "little inspection mirror and flashlight". That is the way you have to do just about everything on this engine! Good thing it doesn't need much. . I had a leak in the fuel return hose once and had to remove the brake booster to get access to it. First time I ever actually saw the fuel filter! The process has always been: remove new filter from box, get all bloody, curse a lot, get cramps in all major muscle groups. Start engine- if no fuel leaks, you screwed it in the right place!

Welcome to the club. I am glad to hear that it was a simple problem. The flash-light and mirror are must. One thing I have learned is that if you remove the inter-fender liner you can get to the fuel line, fuel filter, fuel heater and several other items on the side of the engine. I found this out when my fuel flex hoses went south about 15000 miles ago. I reinstalled it with plastic "Push Pins" that have a plunger that you just pullout and they come out. I have had it out twice since then to access something in that area. On another note, when you do the fuel hoses, it is a permanent repair if you use GATES fuel injection hose. It has a VITON inter tube and that stuff is everything proof. I used regular GATES fuel hose on the return side the first time and it split the full length. They told me that that hose is improved now, but recommended the injection hose.
