Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Newbie looking for Power and Mileage

Hello,

I am new to the TDR and I just bought a new to me 98 12v to replace my old first gen. I am looking to increase my power a bit, don't need a whole lot, and try to get the best milage I can. I haul a goosneck stock trailer around a lot. What do I do, injectors, fuel plate(which one?),BHAF... ?You can see my pickup at the bottom. I am also looking to take off the lift and put 04 17" wheels on with smaller tires. Good idea? Any feedback about mods and stuff would be greatly appreciated.

set the injection pump timing up slightly, get an air charge system of some sort, if just a k@n. you will get better responce and fuel milage from setting the static timing on the pump. i can help you with this procedure, i love to build 12 valves up, and i have been told that what i do on the most stock trucks has improved the milage, even when hauling. not to mention the ease of how much they can haul and not tell its behind them.

The stock 215 injectors in your truck are good for power and mileage. Bump up the timing a little for better mileage. I'd also say put a BHAF on it, cheap and effective. I *personally* wouldnt do anything else without gauges. If you want a little more power than you have, try a #12 plate. Its a great towing plate, and wont hurt the clutch. Then just upgrade to a Walker muffler, and you'll be set.

With the same basic setup, except the plate (I run either a #11 or a #100), I have seen 22mpg once, and 21mpg regularly.

I tow heavy with mine also (sometimes around 18K lbs), and I run 305-70-16's on it. It will pull the trailer just fine, even with 3. 55's. If your 315's are load range E, I'd say run em until they need replacing and then do the 17" upgrade.

Why do you have a 160 pump on a 5 speed '98? Stock that would be a 215 pump, wouldn't it? With the sig you have... I'd figure someone has already changed the plate. Do you know what it has?

The truck was used in a few pulls and was turned up. Twins, race pump, etc. . When the man sold it to me he put on the original HX35 and a new 160 pump with a stock plate. In fact, the timing might be already set at 16*, but I m not sure. would this be a good setting? I assume there a ton of threads that will teach me how to check this. RIght now around town and with a bit of highway driving, I only get 14-15 with keeping my foot out of it (boost only 5-6psi) Is this bad? Thanks for all the help so far.
