2001 CTD Poor Mileage And Performance

Status
Not open for further replies.
After lurking for a month on the website after buying my first CTD, I've hopped on the cool side of diesel. I'm a converted Chevy owner (94 Turbo Diesel and associated FOUR injector pumps and 99 1/2 ton Silverado) who's inner child finally won over the checkbook. Let's rumble...

The Mrs. has graciously allowed me to pry open, yet again, the money pile to purchase a computer box to enhance my power. Here's my situation: regular commuter 45 miles a day, tow my 4500 lb. boat 2 to 3 times a month, mileage is a concern (yeah right), and for now I've no plans to add any other BOMBing necessities.

If I had to choose a brand of box, what one would it be? Realistically, I don't have a need for any additional go fast parts, so this would be the only engine modification. It needs to be tame enough that the stock rest o' truck will handle it, yet, assertive enough to bring a smile to my face. I do have a concern with taking any "void" stickers off or leaving any clues that discerning service folks will give me that "you're screwed" frown. Of course, if the stickers can be put back on... I'm not above that either!

I've heard many good things about the EZ. It seems this is the one I have heard the most about. Are there others? What do they compare? Pros, cons?

Anyone in Arizona will recognize me - the wacko with the windows down listening to Mr. Cummins hum a tune while I sweat like a stuck pig in 110 degree heat, smiling the entire time!

Thanks in advance. I've got the fever - this is just the beginning.

EZ is the way to go in your case, leaves no trace and gives a good boost in performance for the money. The box won't effect your mileage and will reduce the exhaust temps under a hard pull. It's the only engine mod on my truck and I am happy with the performance.

Famous last words!

"and for now I've no plans to add any other BOMBing necessities. "

Toby, Toby, Toby. Just take that silly thought and dig a hole in the desert and bury it. Get the EZ or the DD(a little less radical than the EZ but made by Edge) and you will love your truck even more. It goes on and off the truck in a few minutes, and doesn't mess with the void stickers. I pulled mine off for a few days to get a few minor warranty items done and the difference is amazing. Do this mod and you'll wish you'd done it sooner.

dyno results

Hi Toby,

I just went to the Sacramento dyno day with my HO 4x4. i planned to run it stock (only have BIG Fleetguard air filter) to get a good baseline chart, but ended up running twice. I don't recall his screen name, but Colin Cahill let me borrow his EZ for a second run, and I was amazed by the difference!

First run:

212. 5 HP @ 2650 rpm

441. 6 LB @ 2150 rpm

Second run with EZ box:

243. 6 HP @ 2650 rpm

594. 1 LB @ 1900 rpm !!!!!!!!

31 Hp and 153 LBs of torque with just the EZ!!

A little off subject, but I can't imagine a nicer bunch of gearheads at the dyno day, not to mention Colin let me borrow the EZ for the rest of the weekend to try it real world.

FIRST CLASS GROUP

not thinking too clearly, wayyy too much smoke inhalation Saturday at the dyno!

I forgot to mention that my numbers did not include the boost elbow, so I was still restricted to 20 psi boost.

Galen,

Good to hear you enjoyed the EZ... That lil box is unbeliveable... way easy install, and no evidence of its existence for the dealer.....

OH BTW!!!!. . My truck has been a pig all weekend...

GIMMMEEEE IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Colin

The EZ is for sale...

I was just going to add a box too.........

You know, Just to perk her up a bit and gain a little milage (2 MPG)

Well, if you read my sig you know what happens. Just one more Bomb and that will be it. Yeah right!!!

If I could only do one modification it would definitely be the EZ.

Best of luck,

Garrett

possession is 9/10 of the law...

Hey Colin-I SWEAR I took your EZ back to the tile store. I don't know what could have happened...

Now that I have experienced the truck with the extra 30HP and 150LBS torque (without the elbow!), I can't wait to get the gauges and bypass filter setup so the REAL BOMBing can begin.

I can't quite imagine the difference it will be to drive it with 350HP after a few simple changes! I probably shouldn't have watched TomGolden run his truck at the dyno!

Galen

Big White Beast- Sorry for borrowing part of your name, but I thought it was fitting for my plans (just not my bank account balance!)

I called Fred Swanson and plan to order one at the end of the week. Hey, they are on special. Look how much I will save!

I like those dyno numbers. Hmmmmmm... more, more, more.

It is rather comical to to attest that this is the only mod I plan on. You all can say that you knew me when I was an ignorant wisp, wandering aimlessly amongst the BOMBing great, unknowlingly getting sucked in further and further and further... .

Thanks fellas. I hope I find the same support when I tell my wife what I've become.

4" exhaust

NOW just throw in a 4" exhaust and I will guarantee you'll never roll up those windows again and will leave that radio off:D

I put on my exhaust a few days ago and right away notice some hp increase and love the sound.

ran a dyno test (see thread for NE) stock I was 163. 6 rwhp and plugged in ez and got it to 216. 5 :D that's 52. 9 rwhp increase, amazing. ;)

Having fun, Fred.

Yeah, and the bonus is, if you have a fat *** he'll talk it right off of 'ya!!! :D :D :D

What part of Mesa are you in ATC? I might find you at a stoplight and want to school 'ya, least tell you bomb a bit more.

Oilbrnr -

Southeast Mesa out here by Guadalupe and Sossaman, just north of Willy Gateway Airport. When you do send me to the back of the class, make sure my wife is there so I have the perfect excuse to pry open the checkbook yet again.

All white truck, little "sharky" sticker on the shell window. Cruises the Supe Freeway alot and somehow manages to find itself in the Costco parking lot 2 to 3 times a week to fill up the back with beer (and the wife's gotta haves).

Looking forward to a lesson.

once you start you cant stoppppp

Toby, that look of a rabid dog, is the common face of us all :D

I would recomend the TST box. it will grow as your mods do. just turn it up another notch. :D

with a K&N, 4" exhaust and the TST box I squeezed out 310HP and 675ft lbs. :D

it cost more, but is worth the money hands down.

Toby, if you plan to further bomb, why not look into the Edge Comp? I am new around here too, so it may be similar to the TST box (as in adjustability).

Hope I didn't start a debate on boxes, I forgot to search for Edge vs TST vs DD...

Good luck on any bombs, may it never end!

I want one!!! I want one!!!

What is the price on an EZ now? The lowest I have seen is $549. If you read my sig you can see where the approval is coming from. Shes a CPA so all the $$ has to be gone over with a fine tooth comb.

She says for Christmas I can have the EZ.

But if they are on special just think what we could do wtih all that money saved. ;) :D

EZ or Stage 1 Pro Kit

DD put in a compleate stage one kit, their brand of EZ box and the Stage one injectors plus the boost elbow. Gawd ! What a differance.

On the dyno it went from:

241 hp stock

502 ft lbs. of torque

to

338 hp Stage One Pro

738 ft lbs. of torque

Yes the clutch will slip a little with a 9000 lb. travel trailer if you floor it in 6th gear, just go to 5th and the pieces hold together fine. This is the best money I've ever spent on HP.

Roger

If you DO put in the EZ box, make sure you consider guages very seriously.

May as well, since once the BOMBing bug bites, ain't no stoppin' it!!!!

Power upgrading is like heroin..... once you are hooked it takes more and more to satisfy the urge!!!!

Good luck, and say goodbye to your pocketbook :D

It's all over. I ordered the EZ from Desert Diesel Parts today. I couldn't even wait until after lunch, let alone the end of the week.

I'm trying to suppress that Fred and I discussed injectors and their advantages. It's not working. H E L P!

How is the downhill ride?
