Newbie timing question

Longtime reader and have done a few mods but I need your help!! I was trying to time the truck last night that bolt on the bottom is a pain in the *ss anyway about my truck

93 w/PW inj 12cm turbo housing pyro and boost gauge tweaked pump. I know you will all laugh but which way do you turn the darn pump to advance the timing and about how far?? I move it towards the engine about 1/2 inch and from what I have read it should improve boost and lower EGTs but my boost went down ?! on a hard pull I could get around 30 psi but now I on;y get around 22 any help out there??????

Really you should get it timed by a dial method or the inductive timing light method, but hey. .



Just because your boost went down does not mean you have lost any power.



Case in point my truck. Had tweaked to about 22 psi boost, went and had the timing checked it was at 1°!!!. Had the timing set up to 10° (stock) and dropped about 2-3 psi across the range. Now I have re-tuned the fuel and I am back at 22 Psi.



The high boost with delayed timing is due to the fuel being burned as the exhaust valve opens, lower power and wasted fuel. Advancing your timing will not always give you more boost as more of the fuel is being burned in the cylinder (more HP. )



Have your timing check to see for sure if it is at the 1. 45mm or 14° advance you are after.

Thanks for the reply but I still don't know for sure, which way do you turn the pump to advance timing. I have marked the cover for what I can only assume was stock. I have also done a little more reading and I think I have turned it too far as the norm is around 1/8" BUT WHICH WAY DO YOU TURN THE FRICKIN THING

To advance the timing, the top of the pump has to be rotated towards the valve covers. Another way to put it is that if you're standing in front of the truck looking at the engine, the pump gets turned counter-clockwise. Where did you take the measurement from when you turned the pump? There are 2 index marks that are used to mark the position of the pump when the timing was set at the factory. (assuming you have the original pump) One mark is stamped in the mounting flange of the pump that faces the battery and the other one is stamped into the timing cover. When the pump is set at factory timing the marks should line up. What many of us have done (myself included) to advance the timing is to rotate the pump so the index marks are separated by 1/8". This should give you plenty of advance (15. 5deg, approx). This will lower EGT 50-100 deg and boost by about 2 psi. If you have managed to turn the pump 1/2" relative to the index marks, then you have probably gone too far. As you advance the timing further and further, boost and EGT will drop and noise will increase. Power will also increase to a point then it will begin to drop if you advance too far. There isn't much room to turn the pump anyway because the AFC housing is going to hit the intake manifold, so this should save the engine from possible damage.



The reason you see reduced boost and EGT when you advance the timing is due to the fuel being injected sooner. This begins the combustion process sooner, such that it also finishes sooner. The effect being that more heat and work is put into driving the piston and less is allowed to be purged out when the exhaust valve opens. Since you have less heat and less expansion of the exhaust when it reaches the turbo, you get lower boost and lower EGT. The downside is that the elevated cylinder pressures also create increased emmision of NOx, (oxides of nitrogen), a greenhouse gas.



The easiest way to reach the bottom bolt of the injector pump is with a wrench that is specifficaly designed for that purpose. They are bent into a C-shape and allow you to reach under the pump. You can get a good deal on one of those wrenches at PDR . Or, if you feel creative, you can take a blowtorch and bend one up yourself (I made my own timing wrenches this way :D ) If you want pictures of the timing wrenches and good info on the timing adjustment check this thread: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=60101&highlight=timing

You need to turn the pump toward the engine. This would be counter-clockwise looking at it from the front of the rig. As I understand it,1/8 of an inch from the stock setting is the most common spot.

NO problem lil dog,

well got it timed over the weekend runs much better but I am having a hard time getting the idle down, adj. the linkage and the idle stop but not able to lower it yet. Guess I will keep trying don't like the feeling of having to anchor the brakes at a stop light just to stay still
 
If you have cruise control, maybe let off the bracket for that. There is a small metal keeper on the cable sleeve you pull up and the cable will slide forward and backward to adjust. . I know I had to unhook mine until I could get the idle where I wanted it, then adjust the cruise linkage.
