howdy folks, I'm a newbie to this board. I just bought back my 95 12valve 2500 4x4 last week from my business partner. When I sold it at 15K miles she was perfert, now with 90K on it, we got the dreaded no shift from 2nd to 3rd when cold problem. Is it safe to assume that the TPS may be the problem? If so, where is a good source to purchase a new one?

Currently this truck has a very nice flat bed on it that I intend to take off and put a stock long bed back on. If anyone is interested in the flat bed, please inquire at -- email address removed --.

many thanks,

derek

If you have an Auto trans- especially because you say when cold, it might be the front Lip Seal on the trans. Been there done that. They have an updated seal kit that will fix it up.

bob / kev,

thanks a million for the input. I will give cleaning the TPS a shot, but my gut feeling tells me that my problem is with the lipseal. Kev, could you please elaborate on a lipseal replacement. Your input is greatly appreciated.

cheers, derek

Derek-

I had the exact same problem on my 96 before my DTT trans was installed. It would take forever to shift from 2-3, and run up around 2300RPM for a bit and the SLAM... it would go. I took it to a local trans shop (BAD IDEA... ... I know, I know) and the changed the fluid and told me they could not dupe the problem.

Called Bill Kondolay about the trans, and he's the one that pinned it down. Turned out he was right on the money. I don't remember the technical jargon exactly, but it goes something like this. The Front lipseal on the trans can leak, causing pressure a pressure problem with the valve body, prevents shifting or causing it to be hesitant to shift. It is much more exaggerated on a cold transmission. Once it gets up to temp, or if you take you foot out of it, the pressure changes and it would shift. The seal kit is a common part, and a pretty common problem. I had it done when I had the DTT transmission installed, so I couldn't tell you what is involved in changing it.

I might be way off on the technical elaboration, but your problem sounds an awful lot like what I had a few years back.

pick up bed

Check out the frame width, I have heard on good authority that they are narrower on the flat. they did this on purpose to block any attempt to buy new without a bed and go buy a good used one. Does anybody know this for sure ?
