Brakes - rough release

Newby here. Got 13K on my totally stock 2001, 5spd, 4x4, Quad. Getting ready for a big summer trip up and down the Rockies, Cascades and Sierras with a camper and boat. I know these things can go thru brakes pretty quickly and that the stock brakes are pretty mediocre. Instead of spending 1600$ on brake upgrades,( as I read one of you did), wouldn't it be cheaper and just as effective to install an exhaust brake? Also how loud are the exhaust brakes? Many towns here in Oregon have laws prohibiting the use of Jake brakes in town. The laws are aimed at log trucks but I wonder if the jakes on CTDs are loud enough to be in violation?????I was all set to have a lift pump gauge installed but it seems that the same money spent on a Carter pusher pump would eliminate the problem of lift pump failure????Opinions???I see alot of favorable refrences to the EZ system here. What is it and how much does it cost???? Thanks!!! BTW, You can't pump your own gas here in Oregon and a few days ago I happened to turn around in time to see the gas boy start to stick the gas nozzle into my truck. I yelled and he said," Oh! I'm sorry" and replaced it with the diesel nozzle. Had I not caught it, what would it have done to the CTD and how much might it have cost to repair????

I woulda stuck the gas nozzle up his a$$ and then put the diesel one up his a$$ and see if he'll remember which one diesel is and which one gas is. (diesel usually bigger):-laf :-laf :-laf

The Exhaust brake is not a "Jake" at all ... . just a butterfly valve that closes off the exhaust ... . juust a slight hiss is all you'l hear.

Welcome 'board !

HI Paul, Im just a few hours south of you. I have 60k miles on my 2001 and out of those 60k I have pulled a trailor for work with a average total wieght (truck and trailor) 11-12k LBS about 50k miles. I am still on my stock brakes and have had not any problems. I pull over all the passes all the time. So depending on how heavy you are I dont think you would have much of a problem. Schwab does complete brakes and warrentys them for 25k. Even if you had to replaced them like 6-8 times you still would be better off then a big expensive brakeing system IMO. I was going to get a exhaust brake too, but heck I got 60k on my truck so far with out spending a dime extra on them.

I always watch these guys pumping fuel here in Oregon.

Get an exhaust brake, install a set of carbon metalic brake pads ( about $50 at Auto Zone ).

I installed a f/p gauge last year and a pusher pump. I tow about 20k a year in the west. I wanted the insurance of not getting stuck in the middle of BF Egypt. 2 days ago my lift pump died. I am able to drive the truck while waiting for a lift pump as the pusher is supplying adequate fuel for light throttle driving. If I did not have the f p gauge I would have never known the lift pump died and the pusher is only supplying 7 psi WOT through the dead lift pump. Your truck, your family, your call.

hello Paul and welcome to the tdr !!!

just to let you know your correct you cant pump your own GAS! BUT you can pump your own DIESEL!! its leagel to pump Diesel in Oregon I do it all the time when I fuel up in Oregon and have more than a few station attendents tell me it was leagel (sp?)

aahh anyway save your self the headache and pump your fuel yourself!!! ... but if you put gas in your tank you cant blame anyone else!!!

Like Gberry said, It's legal here in Oregon to pump Diesel your self. and definetly get an ehaust brake you will love it... . I would not own another diesel without one... .

Paul,

I'm right next door to you and pump my own fuel all the time at CFN (they don't even have an attendant). Got a card there when it used to be Eugene Farmer's Co-op (now Jerry Brown). They couldn't give me a card to pump my own gasoline unless I had a business license and signed an agreement to purchase, if I remember correctly, 2500 gallons or more per year but diesel is available to anybody. I go there because it's a high volume location and it's nearby. They have (or used to have) locations in Springfield also.

I've been doing just fine without an exhaust brake going over the Cascades all the time but my 5vr "only" weighs 7265lbs loaded.

I had a fuel pressure gauge installed -- right now it's jumping around and has me worried!

Welcome:) I would definately recommend an exhaust brake. Not only is it great for slowing down and keeping speeds down going down grade it is also great for warming the truck up in the winter. If your pump goes out I would go back with a pusher, that puts the pump where it should be. And finally, spend the money on an EZ or equivalent. It will increase pump timing and fuel delivery. If you can keep your foot out of it:) :) you'll also see an increase in fuel mileage. feel free to e-mail me for more info. Enjoy that truck:cool: :D
