anybody else out there own a newfoundland dog? this is my first and after two great years i have to say that this is the most intelligent, gentle, and loyal dog that has ever owned me. it just takes a little getting used to, to have a dog that can look you eye to eye across the bed while sitting down. "all the virtues of man without the vices" "courage without ferocity" " whos honest heart, his masters own, who lives, breathes,fights for him alone. " this more or less applies to all dogs, but a newf is different somehow. these dogs really seem to know when your feeling blue,{and being a nc state b ball fan} hes felt my pain this year. "to mark a friend these stones arise, ive had but one and here he lies" that says it all about this special breed. lord byron wrote these words on his beloved newfs gravestone, i just wish that we all could have this kind of devotion to the ones that entrust our lives to their care.

Thanks Andy, you have a very sharp eye! I had gone out there with the idea that I would shoot it as if I were shooting for MOTOR TREND or some other magazine. That was my favorite of the shoot. Alot of work for someone to do alone! Right after I got the truck cleaned up and the cameras set up, I had to just throw everything back in the cab, hopped in and got the doors closed just before I got hit by a dust devil the size of Texas. I only had enough time and supplies to clean this half of the truck! Now if I can figure out how to remove my previous posts so I can get them right without wasting any more space!

water rescue, im sure takes a lot of hard work. yeah newf limo ive noticed your name, but at the time i wasnt a member. our two year old ben has convinced me that i want another, but my wife still needs a little more prodding. weve had the misfortune to have had ben and his swimming mate maggie, both be dysplastic but it really hasnt been a problem yet they are both happy now, and thats all that matters.

Dysplasia is a horrible thing to contend with I know. There are plenty of dogs that show it on x-rays that don't become symptomatic for years and some not at all. Swimming is a great low impact excersize for them, plus they love it. There are ways to greatly reduce your chances of running into that in the future, let me know when your wife gives in and I will be happy to help you out. My better half is a vet. so she can even reccomend diet and suppliments to help Ben. Who did you get him from? What is the kennel/breeder name. We know or know of most of them. Don't forget to go back up and look at my updated post. I finally got the photo's to load right.

ben came from a realitively new breeder close to us in va. they are in west va and i dont really have their kennel name handy. i will say this, they are not a puppy mill, but newbies at the game of breeding. they had all the checks done on the ancestors and did everything very ethically. as a matter of fact ben was all of our prize, because of how beautiful and huge he was becoming. they offered to trade us for another pup [you can forget that] and then to give us a pup from the next litter. i told them that even if i knew when we picked him out from his litter, that he would have hd that id do it again, no doubt, no hard feelings. we took him to the college of vet medicine at north carolina state, and [your wife may agree] have found that they are the among the best anywhere in research in the field of hd. ben is healthy, no limp [yet] weighs 176 lbs stands 34'' tall and gets checked every six months. we all know that as a young dog the hip joint and ball have fused taking the slack out of the joint for now. we also know, that eventually arthritis will set in. in the meantime he swims every day and its like i told betsy my wife, if i have to put him in a wheelbarrel to get him to the pond, i will. my choc lag maggie was put out and taken in by us as a stray, she has been bens best friend and doesnt appear to let her hd slow her down. whoops, ive rambled. nice talking to you guys. by the way ncsu has a new early diag and possibly curative tool for treating dysplastic pups, if found early enough. this means about the same age that they would be neu or spd. have yall heard of it? thanks again, best regards, rob and betsy.

I grew up with a Black Lab... . same sort of temperment, I would think. Is the Newffie in the Lab family? I know they are much larger, but the general look is close...

I guess you hadn't seen or noticed my user name. Our truck,"Jake", IS the Newf Limo.
We have three of them. Maggie Rose (Ebontides Comin' Up Roses), Henna (Ebontides Nemesis in Bronze) and our newest addition, our first boy Newf, James (Topshelfs Shaken not Stirred). If these pics come thru you will get to see the family, I guess Jake (the Limo) will have to show himself also. But, remember, YOU ASKED FOR IT!!!!
Both of our female Newfs are Water Rescue Dogs. We needed Jake to haul them and all their gear around. Newfys are like potatoe chips, "You can't have just one" #ad

That's a great picture of your truck, Newf Limo (now I understand your "handle"). By any chance was that picture taken out at El Mirage Dry Lake? That's where Greg Whale took the cover photo of my truck (TDR issue 24).

im no expert, but they are def in the sme class. we have a choc lab and a newf and they both share the love of water, pulling, and going into the water no matter what you throw. the biggest diff in in the size and strength of the dogs. throw a float into the water from a boat, the lab will fetch and retrve it back to you, with a newf, youd never get that far because he would have already pulled the boat back to shore with you and your occupants [unless he or she were trained by a pro such as newf limo] its their nature to guard and babysit their people, not to mention their kids. one of the best stories that ive ever heard is about the three dogs saved from the titanic. two were in the toy class, a poodle and a terrier, the third was a newf that belonged to the 1st officer. "nigel" was the 1st officers dog and went into the icy waters when the ship sank. he swam around the lifeboats and barked when the carpathia arrived to warn them against running over the remaining survivors. when he was finally rescued, he was brought on board and stood on the railing and called for his fallen master until the carpthia's crew finally took him below deck and gave him food and water. "whose honest heart his masters own, who lives labours breathes for him alone"
