I have a 02dodgecummin,liftpump went out on it. was out of town but finnaly found one and put it in. will run now, but-when you put it in gear to run-it will quit--or if you finally get it to go down the road-will run until you slow down to stop and it will quit. ran the codes on it and what came up was p1689, p1693,p0215... friend of mine told me what the codes mean and I tried to check them out--but found nothing wrong... found a mechanic --but he can't get my truck in to fix it for a whole week and I need it for work. I'm a first timer on these diesels --had it for about a year. so any help would be appreciated. thank you:eek:

Yep, P0215 is the VP Death Code. Sorry man. I'm waiting for it to happen to me... . my mileage has gone from 19MPG to 12MPG... . driving habits haven't changed, so it's just a matter of time.

Bad news!

That P0215 code often shows up when the VP44 Fuel Injection pump is going south.

But... that P1689 code: "No Communication Between ECM & Injection Pump Module" makes me wonder if there's a small chance the wiring harness connection to the VP44 has a problem. It couldn't hurt to try removing and reattaching the VP44 wiring harness connector to make sure the pins are making good contact.

Otherwise, it sounds like you need a new VP44. When your lift pump went out, the VP44 probably destoyed itself due to lack of fuel pressure.

Good luck!

I thought the P0216 was the death code. What is 215???

P0215 Fuel Injection Pump Control Circuit Failure in fuel pump relay control circuit.

P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible

wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway

Thats weird I got the same codes as LCarter after I replaced my lift pump. It didn't throw the codes before the lift pump change. But after I changed it the CEL came on. (along with a bunch of APPS codes because I changed it at the same time) 3-4 starts later the Cel went out. It didn't come back until I Unplugged the pump to clean the connections(troubleshooting dead FP gauge) then when I fired it back up the same three codes. 3-4 starts later the Cel went out.

All codes were checked using the key method as I don't have a scanner and I didn't want to take it into the dealer or auto parts store(20 mi drive)

Fuel pump relay under the hood might be bad, swap it with one of the others in the box(fog lights, etc.

i just hauled my truck in to a shop lastnight, they worked on it today, said it was the VP. Really dont need that right now, but thats the way it goes. Whats really annoying is that I had it replaced back in July, so hauling it to the shop where I got the pump installed to see if Bosch will cover it under the 1 yr warranty. They say its easier said than done though, the diaphragm cant be ballooned due to lack of fuel pressure. Shouldnt be, running solid 15 psi, on basically stock truck, pump wire not tapped the truck would just miss and shut down after a while, and this was about 3 weeks after I relocated the l/p to frame rail with big line kit. I couldnt get it to throw codes but the mechanic told me them today, said one was about pump calibration or something, didnt hear a p0215. think he said the 1689 and 1683 though, sorry, didnt mean to hijack this thread

1689 and 1693 came up when I pulled the fuel relay to crank and prime oil in my new turbo. It didn't give the 215 though. I agree with checking wires. I'd try to ohm them out from the relay to pump and check for voltage to the relay. All the while praying its not the electronics on the VP!

thanks to everyone for their replys

and help. went over everything again with my son and we decided to go ahead Monday morning and take it into the garage 40miles away. it will probably cost alot to get it fixed-but-thats the way it is. thanks again everyone.
