Diesel Repair questions

Greetings.

A couple of weekends ago, I purchased the truck in my signature: '95 club cab, 4x4, 5 spd w/ Laramine SLT pkg. It was something of an adventure getting it home... The truck is generally clean and rust free, although I plan to POR-15 some spots on the bed and get a paint-on liner.

Since picking up the truck and getting it home, I have noticed a few things:

1. The cruise control doesn't work... so that will need investigating.

2. The clutch grabs really high in the travel...

3. There is an odd noise from the transmission when cruising in 5th gear. Sounds a bit like crushed ice in a martini shaker...

4. After being parked for awhile in the driveway, a pool of gear oil formed under the rear differential. After investigating this, I found a pinhole in the cover, so I will need a new cover. Not entirely a bad thing as the leaking oil has a somewhat milky color to it, indicating water contamination. I'm looking at the aftermarket cover with the built-in drip-stick and magnetic plus posted elsewhere in this forum.

5. I checked the oil... level is fine but the oil is golden. This is odd because it's my understanding that engine oil in a diesel should be dark black, due to the carbon from blow-by. This is the case with my Jetta and it's normal. This bothers me... I was told the oil was charged recently with Rotella T.

6. I found the jack, but the long handle to use it is missing. I'm hoping that the one from my old van might work. I'm guessing this handle is stored under the back seat, held in place my two velcro straps?

7. The batteries look old, do not match, appear to be the wrong size, and are missing the hold-downs. Otherwise, the engine bay is in reasonably good condition.

8. There is no owner's manual.

9. The front section of the rear driveshaft appears to be new. All u-joints appear new.

10. The transmission and transfer case leak a bit.

11. The exhaust is an aftermarket, 4" stainless steel system. Appears fairly new and of decent quality. However, there is no catalytic converter... or a muffler... just straight pipe from the turbocharger back. Interesting, but apparently not uncommon... however, I do not recall the truck being any louder than my g/f's brother's Dodge Cummins. However, I am somewhat concerned about the truck not having a cat and passing visual inspection (no emmisions for diesels in PA, but it generally needs to pass a visual inspection make sure everything is there).

12. There is no spare tire.

13. One of the biggest problems I'm having is the tires. It's currently running 35" x 12. 5" x 16. 5" BFG Mud Terrains on Center Line Convo Pro 16. 5 X 10 wheels. Two problems with these: 1) They stick out past the fenders and will not pass inspection, and 2) the RF tire rubs badly during even moderate right turns. I want these gone. Of course, finding simple, stock wheels with decent stock (E) tires has been difficult. MPG is more important looks and off-road traction. The two front tires had to be repalced during the drive home, which made the rubbing even worse.

So, my questions:

When you check your oil, is it gold or black?

What is the stock offset for the wheels. Or, what is the back-spacing from the rim lip to the mounting surface. Most Dodges I've seen with aftermarket wheels have the tires sticking out past the fenders. A look I really dislike, and leads me to believe the offset for Dodges is different than other 8-lug trucks although the bolt pattern may be the same. I should have had the seller put the stock wheels/tires on when I bought the thing... kicking myself for that...

Where does the clutch typically release/grab? Near the floor or near the top of the travel. Can this be adjusted? Much different than our other manual transmission cars...

I've read about the "killer pin... " Now, the truck has 249K miles on it, which kinda leads me to think this has probably been taken care of... However, is there anyway to check this pin without taking the front of the engine apart... outside... in the middle of Winter?

I'm planning on Optima batteries. Red top in the primary, and a yellow in the secondary. Okay? Not? Better options? The primary is the one on the driver's side?

Thanks in advance... I'll probably have more questions as time goes on...

On a stock truck, assuming it is running well and has been well cared for, the oil does not blacken quickly.

The stock wheels are 6. 5" wide and IIRC the backspacing is 4. 5" Dodge made a point IMO to keep the tires in the wheel wells and not sticking out when they designed the wheels on these trucks.

There is not way to check out the KDP without pulling the front cover. I would certianly not assume that is was taken care of and if it were my truck I would make a point to inspect it sooner than later. All it will take you is some time, maybe 2 hours if you take your time, and less than $40, assuming you plan to replace the front seals.

There is no primary and secondary battery. They are wired in parallel. If you plan on going with Optimas, replace them both with Red tops and you will be all set.

:) congrats on your purchase. I change my oil every 3000 miles and have since new. I have 207,000 miles on mine and the oil never appears dirty when I change it. I wouldnt worry about the oil not being black.

The cruise control not working could be a bad or leaking vacume line. Fairly common deal on these trks. The leak is usualy under the drivers side battery tray. Acid sometimes drips down on the hose causing deterioration. Easy to ck and easy to fix. Like the last gentleman said the only way to ck for the KDP is to remove the front cover and tab it if not done. Also a good time to check for other loose bolts while in there. 5th gear noise could be the 5th gear nut coming loose. Have read lots about it in these boards but I have the auto so am not qualified to comment. Good luck with your trk. and you will find lots of help from these guys.

:) Forgot to tell you on my last post. There is a gentleman on this forum and his name is Joe George. This guy knows everything about these twelve valve engines is great about helping with info and suggestions. You will see his post in the twelve valve section. E-mail him and I bet he will get you out of the woods.

My oil turns black as soon as I start the motor and do the initial check. As in I pour in the 3 gallons of Rotella, start the motor and let it run for a few minutes and then check the level of new oil. It is black at that point... .

Thanks for the comments.

I've read some about the 5th gear nut, although nothing specific about how to check/fix it. I'll try searching...

Interesting about the oil... Turns black immediately upon start-up in the VW. Still gold after 400 miles in the CTD...

I'm looking at MB Wheels' Razor w/ Michelin LTX M/S tires from Discount Tires. Not as cheap as I'd like... but we have this thing about "holie" style rims... it's a long story... :-laf

Look for an e-mail soon, Joe. Thanks. :)

That truck didnt come with a CAT CONV so no worries

those of us with the fance smancy high pressure common rail fuel system our oil turns blac kas soon as we get 500 miles from the lot and doesn't get clean till we add a bypass filter.

All the other truck IIRC whether "under" or 'over' valved models don't have oil blackening problem we do.

I don't think you have a problem with your oil being clear. I wish mine was.

Ah... maybe that explains it... the VW is a high-pressure system as well. The TDIClub FAQ comment is (paraphrased), "it's supposed to be black... if it's not black, something is wrong... " which is why not-black oil in the CDT concerned me.

IanF, Your 95 did come with a cat when new.

Early 94's were catless. As of Jan 94 the 12 valves had to have a cat.

Owner's manual most likely you can get it from Dodge.

You will need Service Manual you can get them from Dodge, Geno's Gararge or some other supplier.

Jack handle check out the junk yards ( the kit contains rachett handle, extension bar,lug wrench). If you custom wheels with chrome lug nuts you mite have to use 1/2 drive breaker bar with deep socket.

IanF;

Check under the rear seat, lift the seat, might be tucked way back under, thats where I found mine and I keep it there. It has the jack handle lug wrench in a pouch. In the place of the stock jack just buy a Hydraulic, you'll be glad you did.

Have fun with your new found toy.

Marv.

I have hydraulic jacks for garage use, but don't really want to have one rolling around in the bed or cab...

Unfortunately, I found the spot you mentioned. Jack handle isn't there.

Just placed my first Geno's order. New Mag-Hytec rear diff cover and service manual. Also picked up some OE 17" steel wheels w/ tires off Ebay on Monday.

I might actually be able to drive the truck this w/e! Oo.

I'd say that clean oil is probably a good thing. If your tires stick out less than 1. 5" from the fenders, i think that in most states you are OK. With the wide wheels and tires you will have more side to side stability, but loose some of the tightness in your turning radius.

I doubt that i will ever buy another Optima battery. Been through several over the years and they were always a big disappointment. Odyssey batteries are my favorites. Extremely durable, much better warranty. They work very, very well.

Unfortunately, the BFG's were well past 1. 5". At least 3". The offset of the wheels really pushed them out. Fortunately, they are now off the truck as I found a set of OE 17" wheels and tires on eBay and installed them Sat. Looks much better now. I was afraid they would be inside the fenders, but instead they are just right. The RF tire was already a bit chewed up from hitting the fender. They had to go.

I'll keep the Optima vs. Odyssey in mind when I'm ready to buy. Right now, my main concern is getting two full-size batteries of equal age and manufacturer under there. Right now, they look like dinky little type 78's or something (it's been awhile since I needed to remember battery sizes).

i have a set of factory rims off my 95 they have 265/75/16 geolanders if your interested

Maybe... where are you? At 80+ lbs each, shipping is not an option. And how much? I'm kinda suffering from "mafundsalow" right now...

Regardless, I have to get rid of the BFGs first as I'll be shot if I bring in a 3rd set of wheels/tires. The attic is already a hazmat site with the spare tires and wheels for our other cars... I think there are 5 sets of tires up there now... along with a few loose wheels.

im on the west coast modesto ca to be exact. im sure there is a way to get them to you.

My mom's 92 has 280K on it, and it takes nearly 1000mi to change color. I keep telling her she could go 5000 on a change (book calls for 6000), but she does it every 3 or so.

I wouldnt worry about the exhaust- if they say it needs a cat, tell them it's a diesel and it doesnt have one. Bit of a stretch, but if PA inspections are anything like MO, it wont matter anyway. If it's too loud for your or the local law enforcement, you can find a good 4" stainless muffler to complement it. Get a straight through design.

I'll second the KDP motion- I'd bet it hasnt been taken care of. Outisde the TDR and DTR, few even know about the dowel pin problem. Good excuse to check around there and replace your front seals.

Welcome aboard. Hope you like your new rig.

Daniel

Yeah, it might be a bit of a stretch. . as one of the shop owners has a CTD as well... But considering diesels don't get emmissions tested in PA, the visual part is left up to the testing shop. Fortunately, I've known these guys for a few years... I used to sell parts to them.
