GCWR 1999 Dodge... Revised Question

Hey NW Bombers,

The bride and I are heading up to The Oregon coast next week towing our new fiver. Just looking for some suggestions on routes to take and roads to avoid. We plan on heading up I 5 to Sutherlin then 138 over to the coast and 101 north to Newport.

This wil be our first long trip in the new fiver and I'm a little anxious about places I have'nt been before.

Any hints or advice would be much appreciated.

TIA

Dave

Dave...

Don't know about your route to 101, but the trip to Newport will be easy. If you're going into the Willamette Valley, better to go north on to Lincoln City (~25 mi. ) and take Hwy 18 into the valley... . Salem, etc. If you spend any time in Newport, try the Canyon Way Restaurant and Bookstore for a great lunch or dinner. It's located close to what they call the Bayfront area. Not 5'er friendly right there, but it's only about a mile east off 101. Hope you enjoy Oregon.

I am not familiar with 138 (after you leave I-5 you have about 25 miles of 138 then you hit 38 which leaves I-5 about 30 miles north of Southerlin), but 38 is O K. Its a little curvy in places but not bad and pretty country. 138 should be OK too, I just have not been over it for years and really can't remember it.

On 38 a few miles before you get to Reedsport is an area where a bunch of Elk hang out-=to the extent that there are turn outs and parking areas for Elk viewing. I have never been through there without seeing several to bunches of Elk.

101 is fine for towing. Again it is curvy in places but I have towed my 30' fiver the length of 101 numerous times and it is not a problem. At Newport (actually just south of town) is the Oregon Coast Aquarium. It is a first class operation and I think well worth a stop. It is RV friendly. Last time we were there the main attraction was a glass "tube" about 10' in diameter that the people walk through going through the huge tank where the sea life is all around you.

Waldport (about 20 miles south of Newport) has a really unique harbor. Large fishing boats go in and out but the harbor intrance is only about 30 feet wide. It too is worth seeing.

Just a few miles north of Florence (in Florence a good cafe is the Blue Hen about 1/2 mile north of the interesection with 126) are the "Sea Lion Caves". I have not been in them for 20 years, but most consider it an impressive thing to see.

Have fun and enjoy the cool weather.

Dave 138 and 38 to 101 is all good road and a nice drive. If your not in a hurry check out Wild Life Safari in Winston. Hwy 42 out of Winston to 101 is good road to. The State Parks on 101 are going to be tough to get in to filled up this time of year. I don`t know the reason for your route but your missing the best part of the Oregon Coast. The South Coast is a really scenic drive 101 is right on the Ocean there`s lots of places and towns to see that only take a few minutes to drive through.

Oregon Coast

Thanks guys for the helpfull information. The Oregon Coast aquarium is on our to do list...

We are Thousand Trails members so we will be staying at the Whalers Rest Campground outside of Newport for a week then another week at South Jetty Campground outside of Florence instead of the state parks. ( I understand they have full hook ups at the state parks? ) We will be making numerous day trips from there. We hope to see alot of the coast... I hear it is beautiful!!!

The wife and I just did the whole Oregon Coast trip 2 weeks ago. Started in Coos Bay and went all the way to Astoria. Enjoyed the whole trip real well. Pulled our 30ft. 5'er and had a ball.

The best place to stop if you go up north further is Cannon Beach and stay at the Cannon Beach RV Resort! Very Nice!!!!! We stayed there for 5 nights and did day trips all over the north coast.

Hope you have a great time! Have fun!!

LaPine

Hey Sparky,

We are usually in your neck of the woods when we head up north. Been vacationing in and around Bend for a few years now. I have a friend who lives there in LaPine... Marv Bakken, missed him last year on our trip up there as he travels quite a bit.

Looking forward to seeing the coast... I take it from your post that Hwy 101 along the coast is fiver friendly?

Thanks

Dave

Hey Buff,

Next time you are in the area stop in at the Fire Station in La Pine and say hi. I think I might know Marv too.

Yes on Hwy 101 being a good road for 5er's. The only place that it gets a little narrow is around Tualatin. For about 25-30 miles right around there the road is a bit narrow but if you just take it easy you should have no problems. All of the rest is great traveling with any type of camper!

While going through there, stop in at the Air Museum in Tualatin at the "Old Blimp Hanger". If you enjoy history and WW II and newer aircraft, it is very interesting and well worth the stop!! The museum is in the old hanger were they used to store and build the huge blimps. Right along Hwy 101 and easy to get into and out of with your 5er also. Can't miss it, big signs.

Take Care, Scott

Thanks

Scott,

Thanks for the info on the museum, I'll put it on our list.

I will definately stop in next time we are up your way.

Thanks

Dave

Dave I think Sparky10 means Tillamook instead of Tualatin, which is about 70 miles north of Newport on 101. The Air Museum is on the south side of Tillamook before you get to town. If you come up this far on the North end of Tillamook is the Cheese Factory everybody stops there to lighten their wallet a little. There`s a lot of things to see in the Tillamook area.

Thanks ATA,

I did mean Tillamook. Sorry. I was typing faster then I was thinking I guess   Tillamook is very nice and a lot to see and do around there.

Will keep a look out for ya Buff.
