I have to agree with Ken. I don't expect the Jan. engine to be any bigger than 5. 9. Wouldn't be the first time the press was wrong.

uh oh... 6. 1 exists... . it's a v-8 being used in the new jeep rescue (like a hummer). The hemi is also a 6. 1 I think. I really doubt the ram would get a new engine. . it just doesn't make any sense.

Well,

When my dealer called (per my previous post) he said nothing about increased displacement. He discussed his Chrysler email stating that there was going to be a big press "launch" December 10 and that the new 50 state legal HO was going to turn some heads.

This is a big issue here in Maine, where for some inexplicable lack of intellectual cohesion the HO is forbidden. One can buy a 345 hp gas-guzzler, but for environmental reasons, one can't buy a fuel-efficient 300hp diesel (the Cummins only: the horrible Ford 6. 0 and the so-so Duramax are legal. ) I personally believe this is the result of a generation of people that grew up in the 1970s during a period of declining SAT scores. Now they are voting and working in government, a scary thought.

Meanwhile, I'm glad I waited for the 48RE to arrive, and I am sure as heck glad I didn't buy a 235hp (de-nutted) Maine edition of the Cummins.

Doesn't Cummins already have more powerful versions of the 5. 9 in other applications? Why would they need to increase the displacement to bump up the power?

It's not the power that's the issue, it's the NOX emissions requirements. Meeting the exhaust requirements while maintaining/increasing the power is the challenge...

Yes, it sounds like Dodge/Cummins solved the 2004. 5 EPA problem. I'll be curious how they did it after all the rumors; EGR, no EGR, cat, VRT, etc. If they can get reasonable horsepower, good fuel economy and durability I'm interested. 3 weeks until the press release should tell the tale.

Anyone with inside information?;)

I talked to a dealer in Montana, and we were discussing this vicouse rumor, and this is what he said. He told me that the currant 5. 9 Cummins engine has been discontinued!!! That starting Jan 1 2004 there would be an "all new engine". He didn't have any other details, but from what I have been reading on this sight, it sounds like they are going to this 6. 1 325hp 600 tq motor. Personally I find it hard to believe that in 03 they would spend $$$ on improving the 5. 9, only to produce it for 1 1/2 years then get rid of it. If that was the case why didn't they release this"new" powerplant in 03 with the new body style! So far DC isn't impressing me with all there mid year changes! I guess what I'm saying is, I hope they keep the 5. 9 and I doubt they will get rid of it, but yet it wouldn't surprise me!

One thing I have learned...

is dealers don't know squat about the new model year before it shows up on the lot. If you believe what the dealer tells you before the product is on the lot, it probably will be proven wrong when the product shows up.

So OHale, What do they do if you buy a vehicle from another state, and drive it in your own state? Take your birthday away?

Hi barbwire,

LOL I wish Maine would take away a few of my birthdays, I have plenty to spare.

;)

What really happens is that the dealerships tell you you can't go out of state and if you do you will have a vehicle you can't register in Maine, and the Law Shall Descend Upon Ye if ye attempt otherwise. But, there would be riots if you bought your Cummins in Texas and couldn't't bring it to Maine when you are transferred to the nearby Navy base..... Just like in CA (our law is identical) you can't register a new HO. The DMV computer will reject the VIN, or so the DMV told me.

So, what people do is go to NH or elsewhere and buy a vehicle, get a NH address at Mailboxes, Etc. , and drive the truck around in Maine for a while with NH tags. THEN you register it in Maine as a used vehicle. The other thing is to register it in NH in your business name (if you have one) and then 'sell' it to yourself in Maine.

What a mess, but 2004. 5 will hopefully end this nonsense, not just here, but CA and MA as well. I still wouldn't be suprised to see a 2005 show up here with a plate welded over the exhaust tip with a tiny hole labeled, "Maine Emissions. "
