I'm fairly new to this so bear with me. I've got an 02' 4X4 six speed. As of now I have the Edge EZ and am waiting for the time to install my gauges and wildcat maxflow fuel system. Damn almost a grand on all of this and I don't even feel like I've scratched the surface!! But... . Where to go next. I am running stock exhaust with a straight pipe and a K&N drop in. I was thinking about ditching the K&N and getting a scottyair II or an AFE set up. The only thing I don't like about the scotty is the 4. 5 ince hole you have to cut. If I left it in hush mode would it be as effective as the AFE? Then one day when I get the cahones I could cut the hole! Or should I ditch both and get some 275, or Mach 1 injectors and how do the 275's compare to the more expensive injectors (mach1, DD1). I sure do like their price (275's). Keep in mind I would like to preserve my stock clutch as well as my pocket book (although here lately money has been flying out of it). Any suggestions would be great and thank you in advance.

If I were you, I would get a new clutch, I know you want to preserve it... BUT... once the bug bites, it BITES HARD!!!

If you get a strong enough clutch, it's pretty much anything goes with mods.

Keep an eye on the classifieds, lots of good deals and it dosen't hurt the pocket too much... ;)

First of all, get the gauges installed. Once you start bombing, it's essential that you know what's going on with EGT, fuel pressure, boost (as a diagnostic for EGT), etc.

Your next bomb really depends on what you intend to do with the truck. Sled pull? Drag race? Tow? See my signature for what I consider a good towing rig - around 340-350 RWHP and 775-800 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Maximum pre-turbo EGT to date (the injectors went in this winter) is 1225 degF towing our 13,500 lb 5th wheel - this compares to 1300 degF stock and 1100 degF with the EZ and boost elbow with stock injectors.

If you're going to add injectors with the EZ, your clutch may or may not make it. My stock clutch never slipped empty or towing with the EZ, but the day the DD2's went in, my wife slipped the stock clutch by nailing the throttle at 1800 RPM in 5th gear, so budget accordingly just in case!

I agree with the above on the classifieds. I bought almost everything I wanted for my truck all from one person (he was selling his truck and so mods seperate. ) I save quite a few hundred by going this route.

After an ez I would also agree to look at a clutch very hard. I haven't slipped my clutch with my comp in ez mode yet, but I am hesitating to put my dd2s in before I get my southbend. I use the truck regularly and couldn't go for long with out being able to use it. If you are in a situation that you could put up with a clutch problem for a while, see how far you can take your stocker before it slips. There is some guys on here that claims that their stock clutch will hold with mild injectors and box.

275's or mach 1 injectors are pretty mild, If that is as much as you want thats fine but if you will eventually want more buy it the first time, its cheaper that way.

not sure on the quality difference on injectors. Have heard that bosh injectors will smoke more than edms. I would spend the money and go with dd1s or edms. Just my opinion.

Thanks guys. I realize that eventually I will replace the clutch because I am what you might call a slightly aggressive driver (just love that thrown back in the seat feel) but I want to postpone that for as long as possible. As for the the application of my truck probably would have to lean towards towing. I am involved in the ag industry and use my truck quite a bit for towing. I probably will wait on the injectors for my clutch sake and even then get the milder ones. Just looking for a mild bomb to make my furd friends jealous. But. . When that time comes which injectors sounds like DD1's but I am very faithful to vendors that do me right and at the time Rod at wildcat has done just that and I don't know if he carries the DD line. I would like to keep my tailpipe fairly clean so smoke is somewhat of an issue. Last but not least. Will I see a benefit from an air intake with my current setup? Thanks for posting.

It started with an air intake and Exhaust system with me.

I was going to be happy with mild modifications !

Then Gauges... . Did Good there

Then the EZ box... . Should have been a COMP

Then the 275's... . should have been DD2's... at least

Then the Transmission work (auto)... . Did real good there!

Then the Turbo, Price was good so I didn't get hurt... . but should have been a 35/40 HB at least

Someone told me on TDR. "Build it right the first time It saves money"..... They were right!

You really do need to plan on where you want the truck. If you want it for towing, and ford envy;

stage 2 injectors

mild timing or fueling box (at the very least a boost fooler)

clutch

hybrid turbo

There is some serious discussion right now about using the aggressive timing boxes for towing and the ETH engine. #6 cylinder getting too hot and head gaskets letting go. I am glad that I made an in-cab on/off switch for my EZ.

Big money to get it done right, but still cheaper than having to keep stepping up.

Well this is the course i took and its worked for me. That being said it wasn't cheap but i always felt like my mod's were conservative until the core was in place to accept the increased power with injectors.

1st - Edge EZ (i didn't know much then, i would have dropped this after the guages but there was never any issues)

2nd - PacBrake

3rd - Guages

4th - 4" Exhaust

5th - SB Clutch

6th - AFE Pro Guard 7

7th - EDM Mach II injectors:cool:

8th - FASS System

9th - MagHiTech 80 for rear diff

10th - Will be a fueling box

11th - I hope im done... ...

11 had better be a bigger turbo after that fueling box!

128th I think I'm done now.

139th The wife said "YOU'RE DONE!" Which translates into "Me or the truck, and remember who puts out more. "

Yea but which one puts out more horsepower?:D

Anyhow what would everyone say to Mach 1's. Would I see a differnce as compared to my stock injectors. After reading about the EDM's they sound more efficient (less smoke = more complete burn = more effiencent use of fuel) am I on the right track? Also sticks you said that you rigged an on off switch for your EZ. I would be interested in doing something like this. Could you explain how this was done. I already PM'd you but I coulndn't help making the horsepower crack:D

HAHA i hope my wife puts out more, but i dont think thats gonna happen... .

Jstephens, you wont be satisfied if you "love that thrown back in your seat feeling" id do a southbend clutch and a set of mach 2 edms, i did the 275 and EZ route, but i got bitten and ended up ditching that stuff, i guess im still considered mild but i tow almost every day... . dont "settle" get the mods that you will keep...

anyone know what a suitable southbend clutch and install would run me. I was pulling a fellow dodge out of the mud last night in 4 low, had him going went from 4th to fifth and smoked the factory clutch. 31,000 miles on the truck bought it at 27,000. Does this mean that my clutches days are numbered? I really need to wait till fall for this purchase and will probably put about 30,000 on the truck by then. Will alittle smoke hurt the clutch? I was pushing it pretty hard at the time and it felt alright on the way home.

If you really baby it you may make it but I would guess you will loose it in less than 10K miles, if you don't do any towing at all. Less if you like to accelerate or tow. You will be 1100-1300 for a South bend installed depending on which one you go with.

My story?

Bought an EZ-- shoulda bought a PMAX comp

Bought DD2s-- good injectors but should have gone EDM (they were VERY new when I was in the market).

There's really no reason to go with honed injectors. I have them, and the EDMs deliver so much more for not much more money. If you can't afford EDMs, then hold out until you can. Remember "build it right the first time".

For clutches, go with the Con FE-W from South Bend. You won't have to mess with it again for a VERY long time. Not sure how much it is, but the regular Con-FE runs about a grand. Install depends on who you have do it-- figure $400.

Remember, timing for towing is only for ETC and lighter loads:). If you tow really heavy with an ETH, let the ECM do the timing and stick with a PMAX or a Blue chip type of box. This goes double if you add injectors, espcially ones over 100hp.

If you don't tow, then the sky's the limit on timing. Have at it. Stack away with the EZ/PMAX stack even.

As for your next BOMB, I suggest a clutch. Your stocker is already pretty weak, and won't last much more.
