Competition NHRA proposes pohibiting 4X4 faster then 9.99 call to action

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Competition Anyone make injectors for this 14cyl diesel?

Competition A lil Ford vs dodge fun

I don't personally believe in 4X4 in Pro Street , but I will fight this beside the ones that do choose to do so.

We need to call every one to action and find a way to find a way around this before its too late the following is NHRA proposed rule changes. If this takes effect , not only NHRA , but any ASO running under NHRAs track , and licensing system will have no choice but to comply. Remember what happen to Jeff at Houston last year , if you exceed 9. 99 once , your done numbers to call

Call today . NHRA will be at Pomona the rest of the week for the world finals.

Greg- What's their reason for this move?

Do they want us to install a diaper- I mean blanket on the t-case? Front driveshaft loop? U-joint cage?

Sounds more to me like too many cars are getting beat by big heavy trucks.

But, there are probably safety issues. If a car loses a wheel, it drop 6". If a 4x4 loses a wheel it drops 12" or more, and that will cause a much greater loss of control. Also greater chance of the truck lifting off the ground due to air pressure, as it sits higher. But then again, it also weighs a lot more.

Kinda sounds like someone is tired of losing to bigger, heavier, turbo'd diesels. So they just make it illegal to run them. no more embarassing losses to trucks.

The 9. 99 actually appears to be an improvement over the current rules. According to the 2005 NHRA rule book four wheel drive is only allowed on 12 second and slower vehicles, in Stock eliminator and E. T. The rule is on page 209 of the 2005 rule book. While 9. 99 isn't perfect, it's alot better then the 12. 00 rule. I've only had one track mention the 12. 00 rule, but this could remove some problems for me, though I haven't run quicker then 12. 00 yet...

It does show that NHRA is looking at what is happening, and is adjusting to what is being run. I think once we show that we can run safely at the 9. 99 level, they will adjust it any lower.

Just my $. 02 worth...

OK, so what do we do with Darrens 10. 13 in Richmond and most likely faster in Houston? I really would like to know the reasoning behind this. Greg says he sees no reason for a 4X4 to being Pro Street. Well, from this side of the Mississippi, that's the fastest truck. At half track, he's out of 4 wheel anyway.

This deal probably won't happen anyway, so all this is moot to start with.

Not being a smart@$$ but run 9. 99 or better consecutive passes then cross that bridge when it comes up.

It's this type of thinking that sneaks up on us and bites us in the you know where! With Darren clearly knocking on the door of that cut-off don't you think Darren would not be too happy about this proposed cut-off? And what about the others who are close to that too? Come on Thom:{ ! And that's one of your homies you'd be ignoring! Wake up and smell the coffee..... :-laf

David

I figure that I don't want to try and cross that bridge if there's all kinds of road blocks and red flags up.

hey guys if i can recall i think it had to do with crank shaft height off of the track. and a center of gravity being to high that may result in roll over if the truck had a problem. i would check the rule book for crank shaft height. i think it started there.

This is a question, not a flame... Do any of the 4x4 trucks that are close to 9. 99 pass all the other 9. 99 rules? For example chassis certification, roll cages (not bars), drivers license?

Remember also that if this doesn't pass NHRA may take us back to the current rule of 12. 00. There are basically three options: 1. NHRA may stick with the new rule of 9. 99. 2. Lower that rule to say 7. 50. 3. Leave us at the old rule of 12. 00. I think the most likely thing to happen is for them to stick with the 9. 99.

Paul

The crank shaft heigth started with the older cars that shifted the engines for better bite.

And RD, what I don't think will happen, is the thing with NHRA. If the rules are manipulated to eliminate certain vehicles, that in itself says they we not wanted to start with. Darren will run a 9, but he has other issues with a 9 than the 4X4 part. And as far as the coffee goes, I got a cup right here.

To cross that bridge when we get there, David, you saw Jeff load up after his 9. 97 pass in Houston. But then that "thing" he was runnin wasn't legal anywhere, I know of.

I wonder just how much all we say on here is real, and how much is just conversation. Like I said, Darren will run a 9. Will he have to load up? Who knows.

Tom

Is Darrens cage 9 second legal?

or the entire truck for that matter?

if not then as you say a moot point 2 9. 99 passes and it's on the trailer.

David

Kudos goes to PaulB- read the rules- he's right. and then- in actuallity- David is right too... . ;)

I think the NHRA is trying to accommidate us and they see that we are advancing to faster and faster trucks than back when the rules were origionally drafted and written in.

I would suspect that a rewrite on the requirements for tech will be looked into as well with 4x4's running at this level- which really is not that bad, and it's for the safety of all participating and attending the races... ... .

And Thom- you're wrong. :-laf :-laf

Thanks Greg for bringing this to our attention. We definitely need to stay on top of these kinds of rules.

As usual Paul is on top of the rules, both current and proposed (thanks for sharing, pal! ). I too would like to see the 4x4's legal for quicker times, but Paul's absolutely right in that 9. 99 is much better than 12. 0! I mean, some of us are pretty lucky to be running right now...

The NHRA has been outstanding in their support of diesel participation, and I believe they will continue to be. We need to stay respectful of them while working toward our goals.

I'd like to see them use the 9. 99 rule so it can be in place while the next change is being worked on. Look at all the rule changes over the past couple of years, like crankshaft centerline height, roll bar, driveline loops, etc. It may be that plenty of gassers don't like us being so competitive, but I believe for the most part the NHRA competitors (and staff for that matter) don't care that much, and even applaud our efforts. :D

I just left the NHRA page and the 2006 rule changes states, "any 4X4 vehicle running 9. 99 or faster, will not be allowed". So who does this pentalize? The fastest truck in the country. I guess you folks in the NW have a better working relationship with NHRA than we do. They won't even return my calls. I know, I'll tell um this is "Comp the Greg" calling. I can't do that. I only have one line to my phone.

Preston, keep in mind that most guys from NHRA are in Pomona this weekend or at sema. I know for a fact that Eric is in Pomona. Eric's a real good guy, he is even a Diesel guy, so if anyone would want to see the diesel rules to go through it would be him.

Do any of the diesel trucks that are worried about this rule pass all other specs. If so please let me know, because I do have a pretty good relationship with alot of NHRA officials. If the trucks don't meet all spec's than this is a moot point. I will post all the things that come to mind.

-Max height of crank 24" on all truck faster that 9. 99

-Must have SFI trans shield on all vehicles running quicker than 10. 99

-Must have SFI flex plate on all vehicles running quicker than 9. 99

-Proper Roll cage to go 7. 50-9. 99 (remember it no longer takes just a roll bar)

-Master rear shut off on all vehicles faster than 9. 99

-SFI seat belts with proper mounting

-Neck collar and full SFI fire suit for vehicles faster than 9. 99

-NHRA competition license

And I know there is more.
