Nice way to unrust your exhaust manifold.

I got real handy with a can of Extend by Loktite spray rust converter. I started by going over all the rust spots under my truck and then painting with Duplicolor Black bed paint. Underside looks great.



Then while playing under the hood I started spraying parts of my new Cummins that started showing signs of rust. I oversprayed and hit the exhaust manifold. After a day of running . . the spots that I oversprayed turned jet black. . looks great and beats paint that burns off. I need to buy more and then I'll report on durability of this new finish.



Picked up the Extend at Home Depot in the paint depeartment. Blue can.

It's clear ... . right out of the can and seems harmless to anything but rust which it converts into a black coating. I started spraying the exposed cast iron parts of the engine and just love the results, especially after a few days.

Sounds like phosphoric acid. There is a cheap product called OSPHO that does the same thing.

Yes it does just that. And yes I believe it's an aerosol propelled phosphoric acid concoction. It's only like $4. 40 a can so having it in spray form is really cheap and convenient. I was surprised how well it worked on an exhaust manifold that gets hot! Black as can be and looks like a very thin ceramic coating.



Also, once it's cured. . it makes a paintable surface.

"One-step rust treatment goes on white and converts rust to a durable, black, metal-protective coating in 10 minutes. Wirebrush parts and apply with brush or spray. Surface rust must be present. Use as a primer or finish coat. Resists temperatures to 250F intermittent, 200F continuous. "

Interesting... But from the looks of it, it's the HIGH heat that made it what it is. I'll report back after some time and heat gets on it.

This stuff is great so far. I bought a can of extend last night after work and put it on my manifold and turbine. Did the 3 light coats like it said then left it. I will be pulling the transmission REAL soon. (Looks like a SBC in my future) Will do the whole undercarriage with it then. Probably paint the whole thing as well.



Thanks for the tip. Really cleans up the engine compartment to get rid of that ugly rust. Never did like the way the blanket looked.

Phosphoric Acid

I was looking in the tile department at Home Depot last night for phosphoric acid. Wanted to disolve the sludge in the shower drain from minerals in our water.



Bought a gallon for something like $15-$16



Lot cheaper than those aerosol cans...

jcarey... . it works now. Something was off line. That stuff looks impressive.



russ, I went out today and sprayed everything in the engine compartment... exhaust manifold, hot side of the turbo and any place ai could get the spray to on the sides of the block and underneath. Even sprayed the power steering gear and power steering pump.



The can says not over 200 degrees but what does that mean? looks like it likes heat. Hope it doesn't create an unknown structural problem like crack development but I highly doubt it. Maybe it gives off noxious fumes for a while at higher temps?



Anyway. . I like it.



The aerosol isn't that expensive considering how far one can goes.

Showed my father what I was using and he got a wierd look on his face. Said he believes that the main ingredient in this spray is the same as navel jelly. Think we are going to have any problems with overspray? Hope not. He always thinks things through better thn myself. Russ
