Will nicotine craving in humans eventually be treatable? Scientists at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York have a nicotine vaccine that works to stop it in mice. Humans may not be far behind. Resource for this article: visit these days our own blog.

Antibody to be used as Nicotine vaccine

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Cornell study in Science Translational Medicine found that one shot of nicotine vaccine with a gene for nicotine antibody should be put into the liver in order to give out a steady stream of the antibody. One shot was enough for a whole mouse’s lifetime, according to the study, and it fought of 80 percent of nicotine from getting to the brain.

Scientists explained that the mice that got the vaccine ended up with lower blood pressure and heart activity when the nicotine really got to the brain.

What is in the nicotine vaccine

Experts believe that similar outcomes for humans can be expected. Researchers have to do more tests before the vaccine can be used on humans though.

"This is a new strategy that may work," wrote senior study author Dr. Ronald Crystal. "We won't know until [we] do the human studies, but it is a very difficult problem and we need new strategies.

There were two other attempts to create nicotine vaccines in the past, and they used ready-made antibodies to get an immune response. It had to be used every few weeks to work though, so it was considered unsuccessful.

"As far as we can see, the best way to treat chronic nicotine addiction from smoking is to have these Pacman-like antibodies on patrol, clearing the blood as needed before nicotine can have any biological effect," said Crystal.

Next in the vaccine test

If the vaccine is productive on humans, the behavior of nicotine in non-smokers would be stopped and smokers would have an easier time quitting. First, the vaccine has to be tested on rats and then primates. Tests on human smokers will not happen until that point.

"While we have only tested mice to date, we are very hopeful that this kind of vaccine strategy can finally help the millions of smokers who have tried to stop, exhausting all the methods on the market today, but find their nicotine addiction to be strong enough to overcome these current approaches," he said.

My wife's addicted to the worthless substance. I pray something comes out.
John Lennon said it right, "Everybody's smoking and nobody's getting high. "
Stuff's awful.

Everybody that I know that has quit smoking MYSELF INCLUDED has JUST PUT THEM DOWN AND NOT PICK THEM UP AGAIN!!!!! Yes its hard as Hell to quit but transferring one addiction for another IS NOT A SMART THING IS IT??? Like most other smokers I had tried to quit hundreds of times and restarted hundreds of times. Whey my Girlfriend Now my Wife said if YOU WANT TO KISS ME YOU NEED TO QUIT SMOKING!!! I thru the pack out the window of my truck and have been smoke free for 38 years. OF cigarette's, Have restarted a old and pleasant pastime on an occasional basis now that retirement has afforded me the chance. :D its not as good as the stuff that we had in Vietnam!!!!!!!

As I read it ,the vaccine will simply block the pleasurable effects of nicotine so that smoking the entire pack won't help at all. So smokers will simply give it up as it doesn't work any more. It's not trading one drug for another. It should be a one time dealy.
My dad quit overnight but my mom carried the habit to her premature grave as did my aunt.
Hopefully, something similar will come up for cocaine and heroin addition. They might as well quit as the drug doesn't work anymore. Nothing to go back to.

Oxycodone was my addiction, that is TRULEY some bad stuff. 3months of HELL to get off that stuff, never looked back and don't like taking any pain meds if I can take the pain I DO,

On the smoking part it was Habit, I never did go thru the withdrawals that some say they experience, I would be running gears in the truck and getting on the Freeway and reach for the pack, look at someone in a traffic jam smoking I had to have one, have a beer need a Tar, eat need a Tar a person just has to figure out what the trigger is and stay away from that trigger.

Just thought about it I do have another addiction COFFEE!!! without it I CANT FUNCTION

I wonder what the side effects will be. Anal bleeding? Grow a third testicle? Make your weiner shrink? Seems like all these great vaccines cause some sort of radical side effects these days.

I agree, flu shots come to mind, no thanks. Smoking is a dirty habit... . so I guess I am dirty:D however I don't recall any one being killed by a smoking driver. Drugs, pot and booze are all mind altering substances..... 13 years working in a jail proves it, I have seen and dealt with some amazing behavior.....

:-laf:-laf

That seems to be the truth, I don't watch much TV but when I do the ad's for medical products that help with the MAIN problem that one might have are amazing in quantity, but the side affects sound like they could be FAR WORSE than what your wanting relief from.

Addictions are JUST THAT and a person has to have some reason to break the addiction or they will continue to seek the reason for starting in the first place.

Nick I use to enjoy smoking and would probably still be smoking if I didn't have a reason to quit, its the chemicals that they put in smokes to keep them burning that you also inquest that in my opinion is the major concern. I use to smoke Pall Mall Reds (didn't have many bum a smoke from me :-laf) no filters it would go out if you didn't keep huffing on it, then they added the chemicals to make them burn. Gramps and Grandma use to smoke roll your owns Gramps died because he was JUST WORN OUT working on the farm, Grandma lived to into her 90's don't remember what she died of but 90 plus is long enough for me!!!

Autism. That's the latest. Vaccines have been instrumental in wiping out most childhood diseases we suffered from. I remember the whole neighborhood catching stuff.
