Taliban alive and well and living in NC!!

Yep, I am new here!

Just wondering if anyone has hunted these creatures?

I will be going on the King Ranch (Texas) in February or March and would like any insight on the things to do and not to do.

Thanks

Okay, I'll take the bait... WHAT THE HECK IS A Nilgai ? I've been hunting/trapping/fishing since I was young, never heard of a Nilgai. Is it two legged or four legged ? :D Does it frequent the rural areas or is it more of a inner city critter ?

All kidding aside, guessing that it some sort of African plains deer species. Correct ????

What Bill said. I've heard that they import a lot of exotic animals (from Africa etc) to Texas to hunt. This way it's a little more convenient than going there.

I myself dont thing the thrill can be duplicated quite the same as being there, in their home habitat. :D

On the otherhand, I cant afford an Africa hunt right now. :p

I've seen them Jack-a-lopes

Will (it is Will, right ?), nice try, but I've seen them mounted in the Cabelas cats.

:D  Sounds to me like more of a mix of a high plains deer and my MIL ;) .

A nilgai is an antelope that originated in Pakistan I believe and was imported to the King Ranch several years ago and bred. They nearly always bear two young and apparently there is a large amount on the King Ranch.

Consequently, these animals are hunted from a Jeep because due to their nature or excessive hunting pressure they don't stand still very long.

They range in size of about 400 to 500lbs for a cow to up to 800 + pounds for a bull.

I've never had the pleasure of hunting in Africa, doubt I ever will but I can tell ya the they grow grey squirrels pretty big 'round these parts, some as big as tomcats and meaner than a snake :D . Spent the better part of my childhood chasing those critters with a . 410 sg, some I even had to track down in the bad bush (wounded). Guess that's about as close to a African safari that I will get, but it sure was fun.

edit. Not poking fun at you WYD, just bored. Thanks for the info and please post a pic. if you are sucessful. Best of luck.

Shoot A Nauga For Me!

WYD, If you happen upon a Gray Nauga shoot one for me as I need some Gray Naugahide for my truck. :D :D :D

a friend on mine hunted some on the king ranch a few months ago. he is having the head mounted. I believe they like to hunt them from the back of jeeps there. he had a 300 win magnum and shot it several times, it still wasnt dead. His partner had to shoot it . 438 or . 458. or something of that size, point blank to kill it. These things weigh about 800 pounds or more, run as fast as horses and have very thick skin. He is trying to get me on a hunt at the King ranch with him. His main suggestion in choosing a gun is to buy or borrow the biggest you can find. He has hunted various big game and said these things are very hard to bring down.

They were brought into the area to be raised like cattle, but they couldne be controlled. The meat is similar to beef.

bigger is not always better

A 338 Win mag is plenty. (225 grain JBT). . anymore and youare going to flinch from recoil. Since you ask for advice on what to do and not to do here it is from a guy who has hunted all over the world...

use enough gun not too much... . a bad shot with a 458 won't kill a dog much less a 800 lb bull. A good shoot with a 22 can kill a elephant.

Get your gun early and get a scope mounted and dialed in BEFORE you shoot at anything that has hair. Get comfortable with it.

Walk every day with the weight of a day pack and your gun on you. You can use rocks bricks water but walk with the wt.

LEARN your ability with a gun. I can comfortable shoot 400 yards and have taken game father but don't like to now that I am older.

(I have shot competivly to 1000 yds open sights so no flames plz)

Ask yourself if this is what you really want to do. I put this to the end but it should be the first question you ask yourself. I say this because I always wanted to hunt the Kodiac Brown bear... but after a trip fishing and watching them I think the pictures are worth more... . but each of us has to come to this in our own way. I hunted and killed way more than my fair share so I have taken the view of hunting only big game that is dam tough to hunt. (I still kill the sh:t out of the doves. . nasty anamal)

If you want tought try turkey hunting them birds will make you wonder who is smarter than who.

I do hope you enjoy yourself and get a big bull

Curt

Eric, we only used guides when the foilage was still thick while pursuing the elusive gray beast as kids, venturing into the bad bush after a wounded squirrel would have been fool hearty, to say the least :D .

John, sorry, I $uck with names  . Must have mistaken yours with Top Fuel, I believe his is Will.

Don, everyone knows that Naugahide comes from the Spam animal, not the Gray Nauga   :D .
