Nitrogen for shocks.



I just finished installing the Kore Chase system on the front of my truck. Now comes the time to refill the front shocks. I called countless four-wheel drive shops, motorcycle shops, welding supply places, tire shops and rental companies. They all tell me the same thing, no we don’t do that here, try so and so. I did a search here and it seems I’m not the only person that has had this problem. I really don’t want to spend $400. 00 putting together a nitrogen filling system that I’m rarely going to use. Does anybody know were I can rent a nitrogen filling system for shocks in the southeastern Michigan area? Worst case, if I can’t rent it, can someone provide part numbers or specs on what I need to put together a filling system? Also is there a gauge I can buy to check the pressure in the shocks without losing all the nitrogen?

I am kinda confussed here. Are the shocks not brand new because they should have been charged already. So they are the Bilsteen right. I would ship them back to the factory to have them charged then. It should only be $30-50 a shock to do
 
The shocks are brand new Bilstein from the Kore Chase system. I had to let the nitrogen out to put them on the truck. The shocks can not be installed with the nitrogen in them.

I'm located in Shelby Township, it's about 40 miles north of Detroit.
 
I used to fill my sprint car tires with compressed nitrogen instead of compressed air. I got my tank at the local welding gas chain.

The people that I know that have them did. Otherwise why would they charge them before delivery?
 
Marty - call ATV shops and dirtbike shops. The shocks on most atv's are nitrogen charged. I had to call around and one shop in eastlake and one in akron had the capability. If you really have to I think the nitro charging setup is $300. To be honest I didn't want to deal with it when we did my install, so we just installed the bilstein fronts without discharging the nitrogen. Just had to remove the lower control arms. It was a pain in the butt but it avoided having to recharge them. Good luck, and try to get the ATV mechanic on the phone, not just some 16 yr old kid that makes service appts...

Lightman, I think I should have taking the lower control arms off too. In hindsight that probaply would have been easier. I called a bunch of motor cycle shops they said no, because they don't have the right equipment. I think I'll just stop in and ask to talk to the mechanic.

What do you guys think. When I find a shop to fill the shocks, do I put air in the shocks to get the truck there, or can I drive it without anything in the shocks? Will this damage the shocks? If I fill them with air, should I be concerned with moisture getting into the shock from the compressed air?

You can use air to charge the shocks for a short drive for getting the nitrogen. Problem I had was using only my garage compressor, with only about 100PSI. That's not enough pressure to get a good ride from the shocks.



Like you, I had trouble finding anyone with the nitrogen setup. From talking with techs in the motorcycle shops, I finally found someone who rebuilds shocks. Those guys will have the nitrogen bottle, and the proper hose/fitting setup for getting 200-250 PSI in the reservoirs.



Talk to the service shop techs, and get referrals to someone that re-valves and rebuilds the shocks. Some of these guys even offer track-side service. You should be able to find one who can help you.



As others have said, it is possible to install the shocks without releasing the charge. For the front, it's a bit of a challenge, since you have to finesse the shock in there together with the spring. I got the rear shocks in fairly easily without discharge. With the axle at full droop, I only had to wedge the bottom hiem up about a half-inch, using a large screwdriver as a lever.

One other source of nitrogen is fire extinguisher companies. Look for some place that re-charges fire extinguishers... they will have nitrogen.

Call the local mountain bike shops too. For now just put 120PSI from your compressor in them. They will be fine. You might hear a little klunk. Just cavitation from not enough pressure. Have the local shop fill them to 200 psi. Make sure to dump the air out of them before you pay for nitrogen. I would normally suggest not to let the air out of the shocks for the Chase system. With the new towers you shouldn't have to. If you have to set up a tank for air, buy the smallest tank they make, get a regulator, 250 psi hose, and shrader fill valve. Nothing fancy is needed. Just need to fill with Nitrogen. Then you will always have a portable source of air for air tools, tires and what-not.

don't you think If he has the new towers instead of filling with air just take the towers off and reinstall with charged shocks. I wouldn't mess trying to drive a distance with just air in them and ruining a good shock. JMO Plus when you install are you not dropping the suspension into complete extension.
 
Visit a local Cat equipment dealer. Find someone dirty and talk to them, not office personal. We use nitrogen accumulators in a lot of off road haul trucks and have the proper equipment to charge them.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I found a local atv/snowmobile shop that will fill my shock. Life is good. Next on the list is setting the caster at +4. 5*.
