Well I got new tires and went back to 265/70/17 load range E. Went with pirelli scorpion STR's. Much better than the nittos they replaced as far as handling and body roll. I'll definitely not go with a D rated tire again. With the nittos It felt like I needed new shocks but with the stiffer side wall on the E tires I realized it was just the thinner side walls on the D rated tires. I wouldn't reccomend the Nitto's and I only got about 15,000 miles on them before they were completely bald.

I'm glad you posted such, as I was about to purchase a set of Toyo's. A friend of mine told me yesterday, he had just got a set of Coopers, that he was more than pleased with. What other brands do you fellow TDR members recommend?

I'm running a 285/70/17 BFG AllTerrain "D" rated because I don't haul "heavy" and they were a lot cheaper. Anyhow I think the tire size looks just right on a non lifted or truck with at least a 2" level kit. The tire is outstanding in snow & Ice, ok in mud but not great, quiet and well mannered on the highway. I've got 30K on my BFG's and they are at about 65% and that's from many WOT tire, burning take offs on a bombed truck ;) The only tire I like better is the Goodyear Wrangler MTR, but tread life expectancy is nearly half of the BFG AllTerrain, although that MTR is unstoppable in Mud & Snow.

I agree that the taller tires definitely look better but this is my 3rd set of tires in only 31,000 miles and you pay allot more for those taller tires. I payed $118 a piece for the pirelli's . I do miss the look of the nitto's but not the performance. The Nitto's and BF KO are $200 plus per tire.

With an unladen or lightly laden truck the BFG's are pretty hard to beat. For those of use with campers or that tow an "E" rated tire is insurance against blowout(which I experienced with Bridgestones) and sway. I'm looking at replacing my "D" rated 285-75-16's w the new "E" rated ones now available. The other alternative is the Toyo M-55's. The US Toyo plant is in operation now and hopefully will help alleviate the backlog. Toyos are really round and require less balancing weights according to my favorite Discount Tire install guy. Discount will carry offroad Toyos when they can supply 600+ tires according to the head Honcho at my local Discount.

Toyo's all the way. Mine handle exactly like the stock tires on the road and blow them away off the road. My brother swore by them and he has ran alot of different tires on his 98 CTD. My dad has them on his 99 ctd. I have never heard a bad thing about Toyo tires except that they are hard to find. I found mine at Les Schwab. It took them 15 minutes to produce the tires from the moment I asked for them.
I have the AT's and they are perfect for what I need.

Correction. I meant to say that Discount will carry Toyo's full line everyday when the company can supply tires to 600+ stores.

Just curious on your Nittos. What kind of air pressure were you running? How often did you rotate? Were they on stock rims?

I have 42,000 on my 295's and have been pretty happy with them. I agree that they are softer than the stock 265's but I kind of liked that. I put on Bilsteins at about the same time and like the ride, but I run 65lbs all the way around. With the camper shell and my assorted tools and stuff I figure about 4-500lbs in the back. The difference in traction was close to amazing. I could break the stock Michelins loose at will if there was anything resembling water close to the pavement. I put 67,000 on them but they scared me on more than one occaision. I figure my Nittos will go to 50,000 or the first snowflake here in Colorado and I will replace them. I have about . 200" left but I will replace them this fall. How are the Pirellis in the rain?

This is some good info. I was thinking about the Nittos, but am also planning on purchasing a fifth wheel next year and really think I should go with an E rated tire. I am currently looking at the Toyo M/T's in a 295/70/17. Currently I am running 33" pro comps and I am happy with the tire on an unloaded truck. I am a little worried as I am going to pick up 4-5 tons of hay in the morning and I have never carried a load that heavy with this truck. The truck can handle the weight of the hay and trailer just fine but the tires are a little soft. The tires are only rated for 2600 lbs per tire ( the front end almost weighs that much).

I rotated them every 3,000 miles. They all wore equally and I ran 55psi all the way around. Most of my driving is winding mountainous terrain and I'm sure this greatly attributed to the short life of the tires. My original stock BF E rates only lasted about 19,000 but I was excited to put bigger rubber on and probably could have left them on for another 5,000 miles or so. The pirellis have no aggressive tread pattern at all. It's a total freeway tire although they are m+s rated. From the way they look it would be a poor foul weather tire. I'm just looking for something that I can get at least 30,000 miles out of. It's getting expensive buying tires so fequently. The traction the nitto's provided when they were new was definitely superior.

Actually Les schwab carries 100% contract with TOYO for there tire line, as far as the M/T's and the A/T's go... ... As far as what your buying from another place other than Les schwabs, what your getting is the BLEMS that schwabs refused(where i got such info was directly from the district head honcho of the Northwest Les schwabs).

As I posted in a similar thread, I just put 305/65R17 Procomp Xtreme A/T's on mine. They measure about the same height at the stock tires, but are almost 2 inches wider, and fill the wheels wells nice. The tread is fairly aggressive. They are one of the few load range "E" tires available. I can't say much about wear though, as I just got them. They are a directional tire.

As I posted before and tried to worn people about my niitos am glad to see you decided to go with a safe tire. . As I posted before nittos and toyos are junk.

Les Schwab does have first pick on the Toyos with Express Tire here in San Diego getting the balance. Supply should be going up with the stateside plant up. Good paying jobs for our guys too. :)

RStroede,

Saw your reader's rigs pics.

I've been looking for some pics of those tires on stock wheels to get an idea of what my truck would look like. They really fill out the wheel wells and make the truck look the way it should. My truck is red too, so now I have a really good idea of what it will look like. Thanks.

I run 65psi all around on my Nittos.

Yes the sidewall is thinner (D rating), but they ride smoother, look awesome, and wet/dry weather traction is MUCH better. I do not expect to get a lot of mileage out of them though (maybe 40k).

Does anyone else make a 295/70/17??

of all who have the nitto who is running the 285/70/17 e rated tire? and what air pressure and terrain do you run? and what milage did you get?

thanks

Robert

I'm running nittos and I've been pretty happy with them overall. My truck seems to float a little more on the road but that due to more width compared to my stock tires. Mine's a 305/55/R20. So far they appear to be wearing well too.

I have the Perilli STR's also. I like the road look. I think it is silly to have all that rubber on a truck that never goes offroad. No lift and big rubber for me. When they were installed, I had a sway feeling in the back, and it turned out to be over-inflation when empty. I have towed the 5er with them and they were fine.

I have the STRa's and with about 35k on them, I fully expect to get at least another 35k if not 50k out of them... they wear really good... they don't like dirt... awesome on dry and wet roads... no hydroplaning even in really deep water at speeds.

And they will carry weight like no tomorrow... I run 50psi all around and they wear very evenly and ride good... I also carry my slide-in camper with 50psi in them without issues (no bulging)... just today I had about 3000#s in the bed at 50psi and they were just bulging slighty more than normal (only drove it about a mile) and it handled fine... .

They are also decent in snow (for what they are)... very predictable. I run a "snow" tire (read: all terrain) in the winter...

I went from a 315BFG that vibrated bad to a set of these... I'll never own another truck BFG as long as I own a truck.
