Just got back from the NJ Dyno Day at Ida's hosted by GTSJOE and Auto Wurks Diesel. The turnout was very disappointing, and many of those who did attend did not put their trucks onto the dyno at all. We pulled in at 11 am, and I jumped right onto the vacant dyno and gave it a shot. In the end, I pulled 435 rear wheel hp, and Bigsaint put a big 363 r. w. hp up on the screen with his 24 valver. Once the two of us ran, the crowd disappeared. Sorry to not see Joe's truck in action as his ultimate transmission is still being completed at BD. When the opportunity to dyno a truck comes along, why does nobody like to go first and then when someone else pulls down some big numbers, does that discourage/intimidate everyone else from putting theirs on the rollers? Bottom line is, regardless of the turnout, we all had a great time and hats off to GTSJOE and Auto Wurks Diesel for putting this event together. Joe's mom also gets some special thanks for making the great food that made the day even better.

Hey there buddy, your cheat'in me outta some HP and you know, I need all I can get #ad
I ran 365. 8 HP at the rear wheels, and I might have had you coming out of the Raritan Toll Plaza except I missed 3rd again (hit 5th instead, guess I have to work on that #ad
) . Have to check but believe I'm still on winter blend. Anyway, as Chris stated, thanks to GTSJOE and Mike at A. W. D. for putting the day together and a special thanks to GTSJOE's Mom for going way out of her way with the food that she provided. Also, thanks to Bob Ida for letting us "soot up" his shop #ad

I agree, wish the turn out was better and those that left early, you missed a great set of runs when Joe put his Viper on the dyno, best run I believe was 456 HP, the car flat out screams !!!! Chris, great to finally meet you, send me that scan of your dyno and I'll add it to pics. on the link below.

Oops, sorry about that one! I was kinda putting this post up while trying not to fall asleep as Mike also was dozing off. Sorry I transposed the numbers. Scott made a very powerful run for just making a couple of initial basic modifications to his truck. Another thing to mention is that Cummins rates their engines in metric horsepower, which is a higher figure than SAE hp. This dyno run was made in SAE hp. So the both of us in Cummins' eyes made even more hp! Scott, I knew that something was up as you came out of the toll plaza, because your truck was smoking much more than mine at the time. This was really a good day despite the shortfalls. Bob Ida is a top notch fabricator and from what I can see, his CNC lathes can build anything. Next time, both you and I will have more hp, and the race rig will be along for the fun!

sorry i had to miss this one , couldn't get out of work ...

chris , how do those numbers you guys put down compare to your actual HP ? what did you see for boost on the dyno compared to driving on the street boost ? also what did you see for EGT ?

Mopar, I'll give you mine, I'm sure that Chris will post later. My max boost on the street is 40 psi's, same number on the dyno. My max egt's, pre-turbo, on the street are around 1100-1150, saw 1200 on the dyno. We had to run the trucks in the highest gear (6th for me) and start at WOT with low rpms to really appreciate the load by the dyno. I tried one run in 4th for kicks and one in 5th, both times my HP was around 303. 6th gear made the difference on this dyno. I needed another set of eye's, couldn't keep an eye on the egt, boost, rpms and the FP at WOT, next time I'll put a passenger in with me to watch the FP. Can tell you that cruising at 70 MPH, FP is a constant 11 psi's, pre-filter.

scott , thanks , sounds like that dyno was able to put a large enough load on to get an accurate reading , man i wish i was able to g o, could have gotten a real number vs. my last run , and it never occured to me to let the truck go into OD , i did all my runs in direct ( 3rd ) maybe my TC would have also locked .

i'll be at englishtown the end of the month , maybe i'll schedule a session on the friday before the mopar atlantic nats .

I don't want to offend you Chris but I disagree with your post. A few of us all got there at 9:00, WHEN the event was to begin. We were there for an hour. Joe showed up and then we put my truck on the dyno first. After about 45 minutes of trying to get a tach signal on the dyno's computer we gave up. The reading was erratic at best. The dyno was not able to give us any torque readings, and or a tach reading. The shop did not have the correct hookups for that. The owner (Bob)said he would look into what he needed and asked Joe if he wanted to reschedule for another time. I for one was not about waste any $$ for just a HP reading. I don't have that money to waste right now. I was really looking forward to going and seeing what kind of numbers my truck would pull since Michael did all that work to it back in Dec. But you guys did not see any of that because you got there later. It has nothing to do with being intimidated. I could care less if someones trucks has bigger numbers than mine. Big deal. Not all of us TDR's care about HP and Tq. I plan on putting my truck on the dyno out in May Madness next week or out in Indiana in front of lots of people. Then I will know where I stand.

The few of us that drove up from south jersey got up early and was there by 9. BY 1:00 we were getting pretty hungry and very thirsty. One of the guys who had nothing to do with the planning of the event went out on his own and purchased a cooler and some beverages for everyone. So it did not look to us like there was going to be anything provided. We had heard nor seen nothing about any food coming. So here we were 4 hours later and we had to feed our spouses and our children. Nobody else was pulling in either. I made the comment that we had a better turnout at my house last year. Yeah the turn out could have been alot better. So we all made the choice to get going. Sorry to disapoint.

Thanks to Joe and Bob for their time and effort. Maybe next time everyone can be more organized and on time. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=1500602&a=11323219&p=48062773&f=0

I totally agree with the above post. There was no mention of food or any planning at the event. If we knew about it, we would have stayed the rest of the day.

I couldnt have said it any better then Mike did... We both traveled up from southern NJ to find out the dyno wasnt equipt to handle our trucks. Mr Ida gave it a try and I commend him on his effort to locate the tach but it just didnt happen. . It was his call to bag the dyno session till he had the right equiptment. While I was at dyno days at BD a few weeks back, I got a chance to bend Ted J's ear for a good hour and a half and asked if he was going to have a BBQ like last year... that was a great show for anyone that missed it. (Ted also mentioned gettin a dyno this year) ... . JB

This first part of the post is for you Mike. Well, being on time was a bit off for us. I worked the previous night till 5, slept two hours and met Bigsaint and the Terminator at A. W. D. at 0745 hrs. We were all scheduled to be an hour late due to Mike from A. W. D. having strep, ear and nasal infections and the such and having trouble making it out of bed. He was in no condition to be there. The second hour we were late was spent by us driving back and forth on Texas Rd trying to find an unmarked place with a mailbox that had a small reflective 600 on it, then stopping to call the shop, which had no answer. We finally found someone who knew where it was. I had heard someone was on the dyno before we got there, but didn't know who, so I didn't mention it. Sure, I'd almost cut off my own left hand to see the torque my truck puts out, but what the heck? I came to run and I did, despite not having the funds to do so either. Food was being talked about all day by Joe. He was constantly on the phone with his mom, asking when it would be coming. She drove up from South Jersey too. I was disappointed by the outcome of the event and not offended by above post. Maybe I didn't clarify myself. I was bothered by some who didn't want to run their truck due to the tires they had on it and for other reasons which I will not go into. Bigsaint ran his with the two outer wheels hanging off the rollers! We gotta stick together and stop sounding like a bunch of sour Ford owners. Those guys are really depressing. But either way, if you go back to the initial post, you'll see that GTSJOE was trying to get a head count on who was coming to run. From what I remember, the yes vote was in much greater numbers than the overall turnout. That is what makes me think that Joe felt obligated to put the Viper and his mom's Vette on the dyno just to make Ida feel that he came to the shop and didn't waste a sunny Saturday that he could've spent with his family.
About the dyno run. My boost level was at 45 psi, about 5-7 less than I see on the street. My EGT's were just around the zero mark on the gauge. (it had spun past 1600 and was headed back for 0!) For my truck, I don't think the dyno loaded it up fast enough. I know that BD's dyno does, due to the fact that people have to sit in the bed of the powerful trucks when they make a pull. Bob may be able to adjust the way the dyno progressively loads up. Bob is looking into getting a hookup specifically for our trucks so that we could figure out what torque we are hitting. Did anyone see that Bob Ida makes Tuckers? He has the rights to it. He also has two huge CNC machines that he makes rims, brake calipers, valve covers, intakes, you name it. What a find! And right under our noses here in NJ.

I was late sending Bigsaint my dyno printout, so initially, I would've had this one posted already. Bob Ida figured that on my truck, about a 20% loss of total flywheel horsepower would be in the drivetrain and that Bigsaint's 3500 would be around 25% loss from the drivetrain. The dyno printed rear wheel horsepower. I figured in that that number was 80% of the flywheel hp on mine and 75% of the flywheel on Bigsaint's.

Bigsaint's Dyno Graph
#ad

Rear wheel hp = Flywheel hp X . 75
365 hp/. 75 = Flywheel hp
487 hp = Flywheel hp
DieselB59's Dyno Graph
#ad

Rear wheel hp = Flywheel hp X . 80
435 hp/. 75 = Flywheel hp
544 hp = Flywheel hp

Now, if we could get the engines loaded up in their sweet spot.....

Thanks Chris, I never figured in a loss at the flywheel, thought that was 100 % so I came up with about 456 HP at the flywheel. Anyway, I really want to break 400 at the wheels next time. If the larger injectors don't do it along with the PM box, we'll have to put our heads together on VP44 mods.
On a lighter note, I have to work on that scan you sent me of your run, for some reason it really lost it's sharpness, all I did was convert it to a jpeg and downsize. I tried to correct it (sharpen) with the imaging software that I have, didn't help much. Sorry.

Scott W.

Sorry I missed this trip, had a death in the family and could not make it,,Power numbers for the trucks that pulled seem great, but, where are the torque graphs?,,Love to see them and not hand figured numbers...

Hammer, sorry to hear of your lose. No TQ graphs as Bob Ida didn't have the set up we needed to see RPM's. He's going to get what we need for the next run.

Sorry I missed it too, gents. I don't have a good excuse, I just flat out forgot. #ad
Hope I make it to the next one.
