Been a while sense last post... All is going good until here lately.
My transmission does not shift into 1st unless it has been sitting overnight. . And then only the first stop or two. . I can not even manually select first it just keeps starting out in 2nd every time...
Give me some ideas guys
I forgot to mention that I do have a trans-go shift kit(wo-ho)(not happy)I am not running a res. in line either it has done fine without it for over6mths+.
So any ideas...

It's possible that your transmisson is possibly going into a 'limp' mode of operation. They will do this when things start to go wrong internally. This mode of operation will let you limp home or to a repair shop. This is just a guess, based on your description of the problem.

Get the voltage reading before the resistor, and after the resister with the ignigion on, the transmission in neutral, and the engine off. Post the voltages, and I might be able to tell you more.

Check your voltage at pin 31. Just because you used to get away without running a resister doesn't mean you'll always be able to. You want 5 volts or a little less.

Piers, BD engine R&D

Piers is correct, what worked yesterday may not work today. Verify your voltage at pin 31(orange wire NO TRACER COLOR) is 5 volts, generally the voltage at pin 31 is 5. 12 volts.

Colder temps can affect whether you need a resistor or not.
You can verify if you need one or not by installing a pressure gauge on the governor pressure port, this is located on the passenger side of the transmission , about 10" above the pan rail. Where the main case and the od housing are bolted together(1/8th pipe tap port)

It should read 0 psi, in the drive position at an idle.
If it reads higher than that, you could have one of 4 possible senarios,
1) governor solenoid is faulty(approx $80
2) Transducer is faulty(approx $60.
3) PCM is faulty(approx $350.
4) Because of the higher pressures in the shift kit, you need a resistor. ( approx. $2.

if your pressures at the governor port are in fact reading 0 psi, you could have a stuck 1-2 shift valve in the vb.

Bill Kondolay,
I have a trans. question for you.
I have a 96 3500, mildly bombed, TOD jr shift kit,pro torque conv.
Recently started not shifting into 3rd when cold, if driven very lightly or going into high rpm then lifting off throttle completly, it will sometimes shift, then won't go into OD. Once fully warm it will be fine, fluid level fine hot in neutral. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Thanks for all the good info will get right to work on it will let you guys now the results... .

chrgr446:

I know you are looking for an answer
from Bill but I wanted to let you
know that I just got done repairing
my transmission for the same problem.

My truck did the same thing, was
not going into third right. It also
only did it when it was cold, but
shortly thereafter started doing
it when it warmed up. I had just
installed a new TC and valve body,
but... ... I didn't have the entire
transmission "rebuilt" like I SHOULD
HAVE!! My fault... .....
Anyway, when "Scheid Diesel" went back
into the transmission they found that
the fiber and metal plates in the clutch
pack were badly worn. They said my metal
plates were "warped" from heat and the
fiber plates were "glazed. " Also, the
seals in the transmission were bad. The
transmission had over 100,000 miles on it at
this time.

Everything was replaced with new parts
and the transmission works very well
now. In fact it shifts better now than
it ever has.

Hope this has helped you some. Didn't
mean to "jump in" on Bill, just wanted
you to know I had a similar problem.
Believe me, he has "forgotten" more
about transmissions than I will ever
know. Maybe one day I can install his
parts. Everyone seems to be very happy
with them.

JohnP,

You will find it is very hard to step on my toes, i also learn a great deal from this site, the experiences you guys share i feel is invaluable to any technician.

I have noticed a changing diesel industry and a change within the tdr membership. When you guys have problems and share your solutions, everybody wins.

Diesaldual,

JohnP is correct, the most common reason for a trans. not going into 3rd when cold is that and it gets better when the transmission warms up is, the inboard lipseal on the front clutch drum. It is possible that the governor solenoid can do this if there is debris on the governor solenoid screen.

Most guys tend to tackle the governor solenoid first as you dont have to remove the transmission to check it out.

If you are doing the work yourself, i would suggest replacing the governor solenoid first. Even if that does not work, you still havent wasted any money as you should be replacing the governor solenoid whenever you rebuild the transmission.

Thanks to all for the info.
I'll try the Gov. solenoid first
I must say this TDR site is the best thing since s#x (ok maybe not that good but very close)
