2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission no 4-wheel drive

my 95 4-wheel truck will not go into 4- drive. how do you test the motor that ingages the shifter on the axel to see it that is the problem. have not use 4-wheel drive in a long time. what ealse do i need to check?

Check your vacuum lines both at the axle and back at the transfer case. There are hard lines that run along the frame rail and back to the cross member and then plastic lines that go from there to the transfer case itself. Mine came off this winter as well. It isn't a motor, it's just vacuum that's applied to one side or the other. There's also a vacuum switch at the transfer case that it connects to. First thing would be to check the lines though.

With the truck running and someone shifting in and out of 4WD pull the vacuum line off the CAD on the front axle, you should feel the vacuum shifting from one line to the other. If not work your way back until you find the problem. If you have vacuum at the CAD it probably is the vacuum motor.

thanks for the info found the vacuum line pulled apart at the transmission. snapped the two ends together and 4 wheel drivel we have again

If you can search (currently I can't get search to reply to anything) I posted into a thread for this problem together we put up a go-thru list for checking it out. Try searching CAD, 4WD. I also have found when my shift motors have corroded it seems to be inside - so I have moved the air inlet (the side without vacuum is admitting air to let the shift diaphragm move) behind the firewall gasket. Snake oil?? - we'll see if it helps.
