I could not get my truck to go into 4wd yesterday. The transfer case would shift fine (into 4hi and 4lo) but the front axle would not engage. I think it is a vacuum problem because I also noticed my cruise no longer works and my vents are stuck in defrost. Where is the vacuum motor? Is this something that will stop working all of a sudden? I did just wash the truck and sprayed the salt off of the undercarriage.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Will

Vac pump is on drivers side of engine, below the fuel injection pump. There is one main hose coming off the side of the pump. Start there and trace the lines back. Sometimes they get oil soaked and fall off.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check the lines tonight, and hopefully thats all it is. Do these vacuum pumps normally go out? How expensive are they?

Thanks

Will

I am working on similar problem. My problem is no 4wd also. If I tap on the vacume motor on the front axel, it will engage 4wd. Seems to be oil soaked hose from vacume switch on transfer case to vacume motor on axel. Low pressure on the engage side but has enough to disengage 4wd. plan to replace hoses this weekend. Hope that is all. Vacume motor is $129. 00 from DC. Local dealer says they sell lots of transfer case switches.

95' 2500 ext. 4x4 tst #6 BD transmission . kdp caught just in time.

Well I finally got a chance to look over the truck and I found what my problem was. The plastic vacuum line on the firewall (at the top) well I accidentally pulled it apart at one of the rubber couplings  . So all I had to do was push it back together and now good to go. Oh well, I feel stupid, but at least it was free. Thanks for all the replies.
