4 wheel drive works but the light does not come on while driving. If I stop the light will come on after a while. Any thoughts?

azcummins,

This is pretty basic, so please don't think that I'm insulting your troubleshooting. It's just that some things can get overlooked, and we have some forum browsers who aren't as mechanical as others.

Are you SURE that 4WD works? The light on the dash is controlled from the front axle disconnect. If that doesn't shift, then the light won't come on. Shifting the transfer case into 4WD is the first step, but 4WD doesn't actually engage until the front axle engages via the vacuum shifter.

I know lots of drivers have had trouble with these front axle disconnects, so that may be your problem.

Just a suggestion.

31" of snow here in Ft. Collins Co. Yes the 4 wheel drive is working. I couldn't move anywhere in 2 wheel drive. Actually I was in 4lo many times pulling people out of the ditch. I know the light works because when I do the instrment test it comes on.

It must be the sensor in the front axle?

Its a switch,

The CAD works something like a throwout bearing and shift fork.

The shift fork goes around the thingy, can't remember the name (thingy = round hollow tube splined inside with a groove on outside for fork)

As the vacuum motor moves the fork (inside the CAD) the fork contacts the switch.
