Archived No boost pump cycle?

Friend came to town with new/used 1999 truck. Complained of "missing" at 2800r's. Replaced very ugly fuel filer. Engine ran great for 30 seconds and died. Now, the boost pump doesn't cycle as normal. Dead pump? Suggestions?

Missing at 2,800. Probably was dead before the filter change. You cranked the truck, it ran on the fuel left in the lines, and pump, then died when the injection pump sucked air from the filter.



Time to go to Cummins for a ~$145 Lift pump replacement, unless you are under 100K, warrenty not void (warrenty does transfer owners), and your dealer decides the Lift Pump is part of the 100K warrenty. It is under warrenty (along with the injection pump), just some dealers refuse to replace it.



Alot of lift pump failures are discovered when the fuel filter is replaced.



Fill the filter to the top of fuel, and keep cranking for 30 seconds at a time with atleast 45 seconds break in between (manual says 2 minutes), after a long while of cranking you could drive it to the dealer.

If a trailer is handy, that would be the better way to get it to the dealer.
