Hey anyone,

Today, went to McDonalds drive thru, shut off engine to order... ,started engine to pull around to pay window, and the engine cutout, then fired again. The ABS light came on, then the airbag light, then the check engine light. Pulled away and sat and idled for a minute, then the truck stuttered and fired back again . "no bus" was flashing in the odometer display. the other warning lights went out except the CEL. Went back home... . truck drove normal. pulled into garage, and turned off ignition. re-started a number of times, and sometimes the warning lights would stay on , sometimes not. sometimes all the guages would work and other times not. I let it sit for awhile, then it started normal with no CEL, or any other warning lights illuminated,. . and all the guages came to life all times. I repeated the staring procedure numerous times without further incident, . . and no CEL... ... or "no bus" flashing in odometer. . , or any warning lights..... any thoughts as to what happened.

Voltmeter Guage read and reads normal.

Anyone else experience this ???

Truck is 2002 listed in signature, and has only 65,000 miles.

I ordered an Actron scanner/code reader to see if there are any stored codes.

:confused::confused::confused:

Thanks for any help !!!

First get the codes by cycling the ignition 3 times. ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON, without starting.

After you pull the codes try cleaning the battery terminals.

Let us know the codes you get. They will show in the odo window.

Check for Codes.

It sounds like a bad connection/bad PCM. I would begin by checking for loose/missing grounds and cleaning/re-tightening all grounds that you can find. If you feel the PCM and it appears to be warm, then chances are good you could have a poor quality ground, causing it to go nuts.

The bus is kind of a realy station for data going between the PCM,ECM and a few other modules. I read on a thread that the dash guages get the info last from the bus.

Thanks for the help guys !!! I haven't had anymore problems with it so far since that happened, but I will pull codes and let you know what they are, when I get the scanner/code reader... ... . I ordered one and hopefully get it this week.

Thanks again,

Randall

I had that problem with my '99. It was the connector between the instrument cluster and the wiring.

Hey everyone,

The code was a P1698. I know what it means, but what should I do or check??

P1698 No CCD Messages recieved from PCM

Bus communication failure to PCM. A 9Companion DTC9 was set in boththe ECM and PCM.

I guess I shouldcheck all connections, make sure they are clean, and apply dielectric grease to them, ... . see what happens ??

Thanks ,

Randall

Have you had any further problems. I have the same code P1698, but I can't get any of my gauges working. Truck runs but nothing in gauge cluster works. Also my GV green light will not come on. Its got to be a ground or bad connection somewhere.

RGajewsky,

I did have it happen again, about a week ago. I didn't check for codes yet... . I should to see if it's the same thing. It stuttered, almost died, then fired again. I've noticed that both times it's happened, that it was 91*-92*F outside temp. All my guages work. The first time, everything went dead, truck died, then went to start, and had no guages. I was at a McDonalds, so I pulled over in the parking lot and shut down. I restarted and drove home with full guages and no other trouble except for last week again. I think there could be a bad connection possibly somewhere that makes it intermittent. I'm gonna have my brother check all connections, and maybe apply dielectric grease to them. I'm paralyzed from the waist down, so he does my truck maintenance a couple times a year.

I'll check the codes again and let you know what I come up with.

My brothers 2000 did this and we found that the fuses in the distrabution box under the hood are the culprit. Either pull the 20, 30, 40, amp fuses and clean the terminals. You can cause this failure by removing one of these fuses and the truck will run fine but you get the no bus message in the odomiter. I can't remember which fuse it was exactly.

I just checked for codes , and there weren't any... . despite the mystery stumble and stutter... ... . I don't know !!!! Check connections, grounds, and any plug-in modules.

Randall, Thanks for the update. I still haven't cured my problem yet. I had a similar cut out of power about 20K ago. West on I-80 in Iowa, all of a sudden it started bellowing black smoke, felt like I lost 4 cylinders, pulled over to the shoulder, coughed and sputtered for about 2 mins and then it slowly started hitting on 3, then four and then 6. Never had a problem until this P1698 no bus fiasco. I will work on it this weekend again. Keep you posted
