I recently bought a 98' 12V 3500 Cab & Chassis 5 Speed. The timing cover has been replaced, probably due to the KDP. The replacement cover has no CPL tag and the truck runs "sickly" so I figure whoever replaced the parts did'nt get the timing exactly right. Can any member furnish me with the stock original CPL numbers and also if I'm going to be retiming it anyway, are there any suggestions on any better timing specs for more power. The truck will be used to TOW HEAVY! Thanks in advance for any info.

Take the vin number and call a the Cummins parts specialist at a Cummins distributor, they can cross the vin to the engine serial number and get a new data tag made.

I'm guessing 2175 is the cpl and the Eng. Serial number should start with 564 followed by five add'l numeric digits.

OE timing is likely 13. 5-14. 5.

If you have trouble, send me your VIN my parts guy will find out for you.

Good luck, Andy

It is probably cpl 2175 and if so, the plungers in the pump have a groove cut across the top. All other Dodge pumps are flat top. After removing the delivery valve (should have 052 181 on the button in the center), you can see the groove. If the above is true on your pump, 5. 43 mm lift = 15. 5 deg. I posted four years ago that this helped mine about 2 mpg over stock 13. 5 deg.
