2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission no cruise & AIR BAG lite comes on

96 ec 4X4 5-sp 3. 55 Cruise control just stopped working & AIR BAG light comes on between 5-15 seconds then goes out. After I first start the engine , the cruise light will come on for awhile ( 5 seconds ) then go out. I've cleaned contacts on the switch, the brake sensors, & the cruise control, with no luck. I read it could be the ECM, but don't no how to check to see if that is the problem. Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like the defining symptoms of a bad clockspring, if i were you i would replace the clockspring and see if that fixes it. The clockspring is a dealer part (50. 00), and takes about an hour to install by yourself.

Under the air bag, it keeps everything from twisting up when you turn the wheel. My 98 Dakota had the same problem. Hope this helped Oo.

Just called dodge, they priced the clockspring at 174. 00 + tax. So I'm going to try to make sure this is the problem . Anyone know a way to make sure this is the problem or a plac ewere I can purchase one for 50. 00 like mentioned above...

Holy cow, i bought mine at the local dealer for 52 dollars out the door, i dont know where the 174 came from, but maybe that is the correct price, sometimes it pays to live in a small town.



FYI i have one out of a 99 3500 that has a small clip on it broken that you could try if you like, it wont make a good replacement, but it could verify the problem

Thanks Jake. Let me first check out the recall & call a couple other STEALERSHIPS ( I liked that one ) & see which avenue to take. . If nothing good comes from that , I'll try in get in touch with you on your offer...

Check about the recall & the service manager said it didn't apply to my 96 ram. . Called a couple different dealerships and got the same price ( $174. 00), even at smaller town in a different state. So, when I get time next week I'll do some more testing . . Any other Ideas would be appreciated. .

I know it sounds stupid, but did you check the fuse? I had a kinda similar problem on my 98, and the fuse looked fine, and had continuity, but as soon as I put a different fuse in, problem solved. Man did I feel stupid, especially after spending almost 100$ throwing parts at it.

cruise control started working . The only thing I can figure out is that when someone else drove my truck, they tilted the steering wheel & the wires most have moved enough to close the circuit. . Still the AIR BAG light comes on... Any ideas???????
