In my latest issue of "Four Wheeler" in the "RPM" section they state that in 2003 DC will go with a 6. 4L Mercedes diesel engine making an estimated 200hp. Anyone know if there is any truth to this??

It depends on who you ask. One minuet DC (Germany) says yes to the Mercedes engine, the next minuet they say no, were staying with Cummins. One magazine says yes, the other says no. This has been going on for some time now. I wish we could get a difinative answer one way or the other, but chances are we won't know until the first 2003 shows up at the dealership.

Could the Mercedes engine possible be an improvment? Maybe DC thinks it's a better engine. I don't know much about Mercedes, but they usually build top of the line machinery. They've been in the diesel business a long time, and just might have a comparable or better product.

The Fleet Manager at my dealership says that the Cummins will remain but they will be adding an optional Mercedes to the larger 4500 and 5500 trucks that they will be introducing. We'll see.

Mike

Why would anyone want to change the best part of the truck?? They aught to be beefing up the drivetrain.

Shortshift, you hit the nail right on the head buddy. The weak link is the sloppy torque converter on the automatics (and more) and the 5th gear taking a hike on the 5 speed. DC Get your s#it together and match the power train to the awesome Cummins so we can make use of this great engine. "WE doen need no steekeen Mercedes. "

Given the workings of multinational corporation today (especially one based in a different country than the market being targeted), it wouldn't shock me if DC decided to pull this stunt. It would be a bad move. Even putting aside any functional comparisons between the two power units, DC would be making a BIG mistake throwing away the name recognition and even enthusiasm that the CUMMINS name has in this country.
What do they think saved their bacon back in 89? It wasn't putting a diesel engine in their truck, it was putting a CUMMINS diesel engine in their truck. I was marketing genius at the time, and it would be sheer stupidity to switch to a benz motor. Not that MB doesn't engineer/make quality products, but the market for these trucks is not the same as the market for their lux cars. People want the cummins.

Even if they do have a brain fart and do this, I'm covered, just got my '01 so I shouldn't be in the market for a new truck 'till at least 2013. #ad

WHO WOULD GO BACK TO DRIVING A DIESEL WITH ONLY 200HP. EUROPEAN MAYBE ?

It doesn't make sense that Dodge would offer a 200 hp Mercedes diesel in the 4500 and 5500 trucks instead of the cummins (235 hp). Especially since Ford 550 & 650 trucks come with the cummins 5. 9. I'm not an engineer and I don't know much about the constantly changing government regulations. I've heard rummors from Cummins Mid-south Techs that we ought to be putting pressure on Cummins as a group to comply to the new emissions regulations (Mercedes allegedly already does and that's why Chrysler is looking toward them.

At 6. 4L and 200 hp, you sure couldn't call that engine overstressed! If the motivation for DC to drop the Cummins is proffit, it makes sense: They save money with an "in house" engine, and they "fix" the problems we have with the drive train- TC and fifth gear. In all honesty, these rumors have to be just that. I can't believe that our dealers can predict what engine is going to be in the 2003 truck when they can't even tell you when your 2001 is going to be delivered. Could it be the "bow tie" or "blue dot" agents at work spreading discontent?

Come on guys... GM's hitting the street with 300 HP plus an Allison. Who in their right mind would order a kraut grinder with only 200 HP? And if DC is that stupid (They are not) just think what that does to the value of our trux. My dealer told me that starting with the 2002 model and going thru 2007 you will have your choice of brand C or MBZ. But boys, the horsepower race is on. I love to watch all them jockey for position... ... ..... Barry

Rumor thatI heard from an engineer at DC is that 2002 the girlie half ton trucks are being released in the new body. In 2003 the real trucks will be released, including a 4 DOOR, with the CUMMINS and an ALLISON auto for those of us that don't like to shift. He assurred me that the CUMMINS will still be availiable and that I will definantly want one of the 4DOORS. another friend at the same engineering center has told me that he has sat in a 4DOOR at the shop and another friend that works in a test company said that they are doing slam tests on a 4 door cab for DODGE.

Gentleman go to the DC home page, than to Power Trane(based in Germany), than engines. The specs are there the 6 has a wide range of horse power and torgue. This engine is susposed to be for Med heavy duty trucks, sorry I don't rember the specs. I believe the 200 horse power engine your referring to is the 4 cylinder. By the way Mercedes does make excellent engines but I prefer the Cummins. I think that they mite use the 6 in Europe Rams. The 4 cylinder could be used in the full size vans or crammed into Dakota's or Durango's. To make it economical and profitable they would have to build the Mercedes engine in the States.
Isn't Cummins building a new plant for mid range engines. It a common practice for plants to build competitors engines especially when there set up to build the same type of engine. Just something to think about.

A friend, who has a friend, was told by that friend that Ford had control of Cummins. Ford is planning to drop the V8 and put the I6 in leaving DC without an engine. Anyone know if there is any basis in truth to this?

From what little I have read or heard, DC was thinking of keeping the CUMMINS and using the Merc Bends as an option.

Turbo Horseman, Last I knew Ford sold the rest of its CUMMINS stock a few years ago, dosen't mean that they can't buy from CUMMINS but I don't think DC would loose such a great engine that they have had such great luck with. My thoughts on the Transmissions are almost to colorful to post. (Auto Slush Box and 5 Speed). Hope fully DC saw some sunshine when they Built the 6 Speed.

Pete... don't hold back, don't be so wishy-washy. Please state a firm opinion one way or the other and back it up with a fact or two. LOL

The archived material would make interesting reading but this was a "hot new tip" that just didn't sound right. Glad to know it's just something floating around that will eventually sink to the bottom where it belongs.
