1999 Dodge 2500 CTD automatic 4x4... ... ... ... ... . 85k miles

Transfer case engages, front drive line turns but front axles/wheels do not. It is my sons truck and I am trying to help him out.

Any suggestions??

Jack

Yep check your vacuum lines for worn spots. The cruise control will usually stop working before the 4x4. mine was worn through behind a wiring harness one the passanger side firewall.

IRC even with the CAD not working one of the front wheels should still turn.

only if the front end has a posi or locker. If the CAD is not working, only the intermediate axel shaft will be turning with power from the spider gears. just as one wheel is off the ground with an open diff. :-laf :-laf

Yeah, the CAD disconnects a wheel from the differential, which becomes the path of least resistance. Unless you have a locker or spool, you're not getting power to the other side.

If there is moisture in the lines/vacuum actuator, they can freeze up. I lost 4wd when I got water in my CAD, or coures being in south Florida, it didn't freeze. I now have a posi-loc cable to activate the cad. It doesn't address the weak cad collar, but it does engauge reliably. In my opinion, a cad-delete axle would be the only real fix. Good luck.

My 96' had multiple vacuum leaks at the transfer case switch located on top of the tc. I cut the dry rot lines and extended the lines with fresh rubber and extenders from the "Help" section. I had another leak elsewhere. I used small zip ties at every connection. Solved the problem.
